Position Summary

carya is currently seeking an energetic and enthusiastic individual who has a passion for working with boys in their schools and community. 

 

The Odyssey Program for boys, in Grade 6, is an intensive early intervention strategy to assist those students who may be struggling with limited resources, opportunities, supports, developmental issues or social isolation.  The goal of the program is to assist participants to develop positive social and physical life skills that will; increase awareness of their own strengths and talents; foster a sense of mastery of their environment and a hope for the future; increase knowledge of their community and its resources; and improve connections with their peers and family while decreasing social isolation and risky behaviour.

 

The program operates year round and provides activities during out of school hours as part of the Calgary Afterschool Initiative through weekly psycho-educational and recreational opportunities as well as family and life experience events.

 

The primary focus of this position is to foster the resiliency of boys, support the development of positive peer and family relationships, school engagement and community connections.  This involves working as a team member in partnership with school staff, service providers and agency partners.

 

In this position you will actively plan, coordinate and deliver psycho-educational programming, recreational programming and outreach connections with children and their families.  You will participate in supervisory meetings, team meetings, program planning sessions and in-service training opportunities to ensure effective delivery of this innovative program.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

The preferred candidate will have:

  • An undergraduate degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, Child & Youth Care or a related field
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills as well as written and oral communication skills
  • A demonstrated ability to work both as a team member and independently
  • Proven experience in program planning (both psycho-educational & recreational), implementation, group facilitation, and family/community outreach
  • A comfort and passion for working with boys from diverse populations including; life experiences, race, culture, identity, ability, beliefs, values, etc.
  • A commitment and ability to work from a collaborative stance with family, school and community systems/partners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle and be able to work flexible hours

The preferred candidate must successfully complete a Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check and a Child Intervention Record Check and have or be willing to obtain First Aid Certification, Class 4 driver’s license and business vehicle insurance.  

 

This position functions as a strong role model for male youth and as such, preference will be given to male identifying candidates.
