Rate: $25/hour for 10 hours per week

The Fig Tree Foundation is an international development grant-making organization that connects communities in Calgary and abroad to facilitate improved results ‚Äčin ‚Äčinternational development. We envision a world where all communities are empowered, self-reliant, and self-sustaining. Through our Roundtable community, we build collaborative capacity and partner with Calgary and area-based international development non governmental organizations (INGOs) to invest in projects that meet our criteria of sustainability, effectiveness, collaboration, and transparency.


As a volunteer-driven organization with a small staff team, the Volunteer Coordinator plays a critical role in the management of Fig Tree Foundation by leading volunteer recruitment, onboarding, engagement, retention and recognition. We seek to offer unique and meaningful volunteer opportunities in the areas of fund development, communications and events, project grants (including monitoring and evaluation), and working with our Roundtable Member organizations to increase the sustainability of international development initiatives, thereby transforming international development. 


The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for ensuring our volunteers are our biggest champions, supporting them to see the impact of their contributions to our work. In addition to recruiting and onboarding volunteers the Volunteer Coordinator will support Team Leads and staff to manage volunteers, tasks, and project delivery. The Volunteer Coordinator may oversee performance management plans as required.

  • Work with CEO to develop and implement volunteer retention strategy.
  • Support Team Leads and staff to identify volunteer needs; develop and post volunteer job descriptions.
  • Source and recruit volunteers using various recruiting approaches, events, and platforms.
  • Collect information on qualifications and skills, check references and coordinate offers to volunteers.
  • Manage data administration of volunteer records using Better Impact.
  • Arrange onboarding and training sessions for new volunteers, including organizational and team-specific training.
  • Work with Event Coordinator and staff to offer professional development and social opportunities for volunteers throughout the year.
  • Manage volunteer recognition activities, including Haynes Award for Volunteers nomination process annually in the fall.
  • Coordinate and execute internal communications with CEO and Communications Team, including updating the organizational chart regularly.
  • Provide occasional assistance on HR matters such as hiring and onboarding new staff, interns, and Board Members.
  • Work with Team Leads to implement effective team management processes.


  • Minimum one year of experience in a similar role in the non-profit sector required; 2+ years preferred. Some HR experience preferred.
  • Comfortable implementing best practices in volunteer management; demonstrated experience recruiting and onboarding new volunteers.
  • Team player with a willingness to take ownership of areas of responsibility, supported by the CEO and other staff and volunteers.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to lead training and onboarding sessions, generate passion for our cause amongst volunteers, and effectively manage volunteer relationships.
  • Update volunteer recruitment and onboarding materials on a regular basis.
  • Support Team Leads to improve productivity by ensuring volunteers are equipped with the tools, resources, and information to deliver on projects and tasks.
  • Sustained (minimum one year) experience as a volunteer strongly preferred.
  • Strong digital literacy; ability to learn and utilize collaboration tools and information management systems, championing these systems within the organization.
  • BSc/BA or equivalent education and experience in business administration, human resources, sociology, international development, political science or a related field.
