Position Summary: This position is a pivotal leadership position that works with the management team to lead, support, and further evolve Hospice Calgary’s continuum of services. The position has broad responsibilities with respect to planning, program management, quality improvement, partnership building, compliance, and community engagement. The Senior Director of Programs and Services acts as Interim Executive Director when required.

The position also contributes to an ethical, safe, and inclusive environment through knowledge and practice of the organization’s policies and procedures.  

Hospice Calgary guides children, teens and adults through the grieving process as they face a life threatening illness and death of a loved one. Our team of professionals provide individual, family and group support as well as 24 hour end-of-life care.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Program Development:

  • Works with program directors/managers on program development initiatives
  • Works with program directors/managers to develop and monitor department specific business plans
  • Supports agency-wide initiatives that impact clinical services and require compliance with set standards including: Accreditation, ASWB status (Association of Social Work Boards), and Emergency Preparedness
  • Works with applicable directors/managers to develop partnerships with post-secondary institutions
  • Oversees the development of a framework for, and coordination of, the organization’s continuing education programs
  • Acts as the staff lead for the Quality Improvement Committee
  • Manages relationships with external contract providers
  • Coaches program directors/managers as they implement the strategic plan through business plan activities and monitors the alignment of program operations

Data Management:

  • Evaluates outcome measurement tools, makes recommendations, and develops plans for change as necessary
  • Works with directors/managers to gather and report program data and Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
  • Works with directors/managers to assess potential areas for research and liaises with post-secondary institutions to examine opportunities for collaboration

Administration and Human Resources Management:

  • Provides direct supervision to the Director of Community Hospice Services, Director of the Children’s Grief Centre, and the Manager of Volunteer Services
  • Builds relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization
  • Works with directors/managers to review and revise clinical program budgets and the yearly statistical collection process
  • Assists with development of clinical risk management policies and procedures
  • Organizes and attends departmental meetings to maintain effective communication
  • Participates in committee work and community initiatives as appropriate
  • Acts as a member of the organization’s Ethics Committee

Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Maintains knowledge of current occupational health and safety practice and ensures compliance with provincial and federal legislation
  • Develops and evaluates the Organization Safety Plan and implements quality and safety improvement measures
  • Develops and evaluates the Emergency Preparedness Plan and implements quality and safety improvement measures
  • Develops, evaluates, and delivers employee health and safety training and education and implements improvement measures
  • Sits as a member and provides leadership to the Occupational Health and Safety Committee
  • Coordinates accreditation reviews conducted by Accreditation Canada
  • Develops and evaluates the organization’s Information Management Plan (management of patient, client, staff, volunteers, and donor information) and implements quality improvement measures to ensure compliance with best practice and federal and provincial legislation
  • Acts as the Privacy Officer for the organization

 Other:

  • Assists with proposal development, report writing, or other similar projects as required
  • Participates on selected agency, community, or Board committees as appropriate
  • Assists with other duties and projects as required

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • 5 year minimum senior management experience is required
  • Master’s Degree preferred or commensurate combination of education and work experience considered
  • Current registration with professional association is required
  • 5 years’ experience in clinical supervision and program development is required
  • Prior management experience in a non-profit setting is required
  • Prior experience using a clinical database is preferred
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; advanced skills in Microsoft Office
  • Experience in agency budgeting and fiscal management
  • Prior experience with public speaking
  • Strong knowledge of Hospice and Palliative Care Services in Calgary and surrounding areas

Working Conditions

A standard work week is usually required (143 hours/month). Evening and weekend work is required on occasion.
