What you’ll be doing:

We believe that every Calgarian should have a $500 emergency fund to cover unexpected expenses and foster financial wellness. For 20 years Momentum has successfully offered face-to-face matched savings programs that combine savings incentives and financial education. Now, we are taking this concept into the digital space! We have partnered with a fintech company to help us offer an automated savings app to reach as many Calgarians living on a low income as possible. Eligible users download the app, link their bank account, and get incentivized to save every month.

As the lead of this program, your main responsibilities include:

a)    Acquiring app users through online marketing, old-fashioned networking, and social media

b)    Creating an experience of community for savers in the app

c)    Supporting savers to succeed in the program

d)    Managing day-to-day program details and contributing to the broader culture at Momentum

Who we’re looking for:

This is a new position at Momentum within our suite of Financial Empowerment programming. You will have the opportunity to lead the launch of this new online savings program to success. You will shape its direction through test and learn tactics, data analysis and implementing actionable insights. You care about social change, helping others and know how to use your voice and written word to reach our target audience. You embrace technology, but you’re not an IT professional. You have enough tech savviness to utilize digital marketing, trendy apps, and social media. Additionally, you see yourself in these descriptions:

Key Areas of Responsibility:

a)    Program Marketing and User Acquisition

  • Lead the development and implementation of a marketing strategy for the program with an annual target of 500+ app downloads and user engagement
  • Implement and oversee an integrated marketing campaign including traditional, digital and social media channels to low income target audiences
  • Create and adapt marketing materials
  • Build awareness and trust of the program by directly speaking to individuals and groups at outreach events
  • Establish and maintain quality working relationships with community organizations, government agencies, low-income employers, etc. to integrate the online savings program as a regular offering for their respective clientele 

b)    Building a Community of Savers

  • Build an online community by using inspirational content that motivates users to save money and tackle financial ‘adulting’ issues with their online peers
  • Curate and produce content for online channels including articles and useful tips to registered users
  • Moderate, reply and engage in social media
  • Organize and host 3-5 events per year for the savers  

c)    Supporting Savers to Success

  • Support savers with basic tasks (e.g. how to navigate through the app) and refer them to third party technical support when needed
  • Gather user feedback on the app and provide new features and functionality changes to the product developer
  • Be a financial empowerment ‘coach’ for users by providing basic financial literacy information and resources (training will be provided to you)
  • Compassionately refer savers to access in-person supports through other Momentum programs or community resources

d)    Program Administration & Organizational Involvement

  • Acquire and maintain accurate and confidential user records with database applications
  • Use innovative rapid-testing approaches and evaluation to revise program strategies
  • Prepare required program and funder reports
  • Ensure program policies and terms of service are being followed, including occasional program qualification audits
  • Contribute to Momentum’s strategic plan and internal committees
  • Participate in departmental planning and related projects
  • Support department team members with related programming, as needed
  • Engage with relevant colleagues and networks inside and outside of Calgary 

What you need to do it well: 


  • Post-secondary education in the field of marketing, communications, media studies, innovation, or other related fields
  • Training in digital marketing (eg: Facebook Blueprint, Social School, Google Academy, etc.)
  • Proficiency in strategizing and implementing direct response/acquisition marketing campaigns via traditional methods, online, and through partnerships
  • Experience in online community engagement 
  • Skilled at producing content (eg: copy, advertising material, collateral, videos, web pages, blog posts, email campaigns, etc.)
  • Experience in selling or pitching a product
  • Experience monitoring and determining the effectiveness of a marketing campaign with the ability to be creative and innovative as you go
  • Experience in partnership building and stakeholder relations 
  • Experience with data collection and data management systems


  • Experience in the non-profit sector
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Comfort in event planning and speaking to groups
  • Knowledge of basic financial literacy
