Night Counsellors

The Nights program is expanding and we are currently looking to fill 6 full time Night Counsellor positions and 2 part time, 0.8 positions. 

These awake overnight positions will be responsible for the Night Counsellor duties in these programs. Each program has 2 staff working at all times and 2 Security Officers are always available as back up.

The Night Counsellor's primary responsibilities are to attend to the health and welfare of the children and the security of the programs and campus. Employees in this classification are essential to the team and program and perform important work as it applies to the care, nurturance, and supervision of our youth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the physical security of the program.
  • Conduct program rounds with the evening and morning staff to ensure good program order, security, and account for all the children.
  • Routinely conduct rounds throughout the night at designated intervals, and as necessary in situations when increased surveillance of the program and children is warranted, e.g., when there are concerns regarding runaways, suicide, self-harm and medical issues.
  • Keep apprised of all relevant documentation pertaining to program and children such as the communications book, memos, program manuals, service plans, and night directives manual.
  • Record observations and significant information in appropriate reporting formats, e.g., runaway reports, confinement sheets and contact books.
  • Attend to the physical needs and medical requirements of the children. 
  • Ensure effective follow-through of specific interventions and strategies for each child as per treatment plan and directives.
  • Report information about night events, child count, and all significant/atypical situations to the Nights Program Coordinator, senior staff or other appropriate personnel as required.
  • Maintain an up-to-date bed plan in the night directives book.
  • Within reason, attend to housekeeping tasks.
  • Attend to administrative tasks as required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in Human Services or Social Sciences and/or related academic or work experience is necessary.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • High level of personal maturity and responsibility. 
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
  • Clear Police Check including Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check.
  • Completion of ASIST, First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and certification with CYCAA would be considered an asset.
  • Preference will be given to those that have completed coursework and/or certification in Brain Development or Trauma Informed Care. Some suggested courses include:
