Mobile Primary Care Physician – Ref. No. 19079

Community Health Bus

The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.  The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of health care that is accessible, responsive and participatory.

What we do and why we do it:

Our Community Health Bus is back better than ever!  The Community Health Bus removes barriers to health care by providing direct services, education, and advocacy free of charge to our City’s most vulnerable in poverty and homelessness. Our dedicated team of professionals are passionately committed to providing services and supports that break down barriers to a healthy future. Our mobile health bus will visit various high schools and community sites throughout the City of Calgary.

The Mobile Primary Care Physician at The Alex provides walk-in and appointment based family practice in a non-judgmental, holistic, and opportunistic manner. Working alongside multidisciplinary team members, physicians are required to understand the social determinants of health as they pertain to this vulnerable and underserved population, and to provide full-scope medical care with a trauma-informed and harm reduction perspective.   Reimbursement is via alternative-relationship plan (ARP), with booked appointments typically 30-60 minutes long, and physicians are also expected to participate in team-based, multidisciplinary care.

What you will do:

  • Full scope family practice for clients of all ages (including youth as well as infants and children of clients)
  • Special skill sets are encouraged and preferred (i.e. transgender medicine, procedures, IUD insertions, opiate agonist therapy, prenatal care, emergency/urgent care, mental health, sports medicine, etc.)
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with nurses, mental health providers, and youth workers
  • Facilitate and support allied health team members to work to full-scope of practice
  • Flexibility in regards to patient scheduling for same-day, walk-in appointments (there are frequent no shows and cancellations of scheduled appointments)
  • Respond to acute concerns as appropriate for a family physician in an outpatient setting (i.e. irregular behavior, drug overdoses, active suicidality)
  • Feel comfortable in completing a Form 1, as required
  • Prescribe contraception and counsel on pregnancy choices
  • Complete shadow billing for the ARP
  • Attend primary care provider meetings once every three months in the evening

What you will bring:

  • Good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
  • 2+ years of experience working with vulnerable populations
  • A passion for advocating and building relationships with clients
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable driving a large vehicle in variable weather conditions
  • Minimum class 5 non-GDL driver’s license and a clear 5-year drivers abstract; additional driving training will be provided by Alex
  • Candidate must be willing to have a Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check completed
  • Valid First Aid and CPR
  • Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) 94 Calls to Action considered an asset

If you are looking to make a direct impact on the health of our community members by providing service on our state of the art medical facility on wheels, you may have found your fit!
