The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives. The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of health care that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Family Health Centre, we run a Seniors Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Community Food Centre and Youth Law. 

What we do and why we do it: 

Pathways to Housing is a Housing First Program through The Alex that supports formerly homeless clients. With a focus on harm reduction, this uniquely client-driven approach utilizes an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team. 

We are currently seeking a motivated, flexible, client-focused Mental Health Clinician to work as part of this innovative team. The full-time Mental Health Clinician is a key member of the Pathways team and is responsible for working with the program clients using principles of psychiatric rehabilitation, and a variety of theoretical approaches to assist them in moving toward independent living in community residences.  This is a permanent full-time position. 

What you will do: 

  • Provide a range of therapeutic supports and community rehabilitation services to clients in the community
  • Conduct client assessments and create treatment plans/goals with the client
  • Working within the context of client-centered care and multidisciplinary service delivery, provide individual and group therapy to clients 

What you will bring:

  • Master’s Degree preferred in Psychology, Social Work, Community Rehabilitation, or related field
  • Preferred two years’ experience as a Mental Health Clinician
  • Current registration with their professional discipline in Alberta
  • Social Workers must be authorized to perform psychosocial interventions
  • Knowledge of mental health/psychiatric conditions, substance abuse, individual and family development stages, and Mental Health Act
  • Previous experience working with clients experiencing homelessness and poverty
  • Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention
  • Strong counselling skills in evidence based modalities
  • Demonstrated effective communication, organization, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skills
  • Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment
  • Have an understanding of the criminal justice system and liaise with community parole and probation.
