Position Summary: 

The Manager, Family Shelter will assist in the planning, organization, development, publicity, and evaluation of Family Support Services. They will also perform supervisory, administrative and professional duties in the operation of the shelter activities.  She/he will organize, schedule and supervise volunteers and staff to ensure the timely completion of assigned duties, and to ensure that all work is completed following established safe work practices. The Manager, Family Shelter will enforce established company policies and provide guidance for employees. She/he recommends goals and objectives for the Family Support Services operation and provides actionable insight into the completion of requirements.  She/he will be the lead on ensuring all accreditation requirements are met and ensure any corrective action is complied with.  The Manager, Family Shelter will be available to support Family Support Workers and Team Lead’s, Family Support if CFS or other agency requires information pertaining to guests of IFTC.  The incumbent will communicate effectively with the guests, Director of Programs, Family Support staff and IFTC staff.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise activities using knowledge of the proper policies and procedures.
  • Ensures all training required certifications are current for all staff
  • Identifies, establishes and oversees the safety program to ensure compliance with Inn from the Cold and mandated safety regulations.
  • Identifies and communicates safety risks and hazards to employees and devises corrective measures.
  • Supervises and participates in activities to prevent and/or correct violations of IFTC’s department rules.
  • Follows unit emergency response procedures and responds to emergencies related to accidents, injuries, or threats to control the facility.
  • Coordinates and assists in the recruitment, hiring, and training of candidates for volunteer and employment programs.
  • Selects, schedules and assigns staff, ensuring equal employment opportunity in hiring and promotion.
  • Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Identifies requirements for the successful completion of assigned tasks for subordinate employees and obtains and allocates appropriate training accordingly.
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of the budget requests.
  • Identifies staff development and training needs and recommends the allocation of training.
  • Ensures proper labour relations and conditions of employment are maintained.
  • Maintains records, prepares reports, and composes correspondence relative to the work.
  • Maintains inventory on supplies, and materials and requisitions supply and materials.

  • Completion of High School Diploma
  • Post Secondary Degree in Social Work or work experience in a related field required
  • 3 - 5 years’ experience in a leadership role.
  • Some supervisory experience or a combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Strong delegation, planning and leadership skills
  • Effectiveness in safety and productivity
  • Knowledge of local, provincial and federal workplace compliance regulations, ordinances and legislation
  • Commitment to working in a team environment, with established team building abilities
  • Strong communication, leadership, integration, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
