The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.  The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of health care that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Family Health Centre, we run a Seniors Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Community Food Centre and Youth Law.

What we do and why we do it:

Under the general direction of the Clinic Team Lead(s) and Clinical Operations Coordinator, and, as a part of the multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works to deliver comprehensive care to meet the needs of our community members.  At The Alex, the LPN completes clinic and community health duties to ensure our clients are receiving quality and holistic care, and practices within their scope of practice.  This also includes providing Family Clinic, Youth Clinic, and Seniors Clinic clients’ with dignified, nonjudgmental and respectful care.  Over time these duties will evolve due to patient and clinic demands.

The LPN works to improve and create programming where needed to provide health prevention and promotion to our clients.  The LPN is accountable to the public for his/her own practice, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, the Canadian Nurses’ Association Code of Ethics, and the Health Profession Act.  With the above guidelines in mind, the LPN creates short and long term goals with their supervisor for improvement and professional development to occur. 

What you will do: 

  • Strong commitment to working with individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness and addictions
  • Strong skills in health promotion and illness prevention
  • Possess the skills or be willing to learn the skills of phlebotomy
  • Management and administration of medication in conjunction with the Psychiatrist and Family Physician
  • Performing assessments, providing education and supporting clients directly
  • Ability to build rapport with marginalized individuals, understanding of Mature Minor Doctrine in Alberta, time management skills, ability to work independently 
  • Strong knowledge of sexual and reproductive health, child and adolescent development, and harm reduction
  • Receive training in the areas of evidence based practice such as Motivational Interviewing, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training, Trauma Informed Care training, Mental Health First Aid, ASSIST, and Narcan Administration Answers the telephone, screens and relays messages to patient and staff, greets and directs patients and families
  • Provides data entry, photocopying, faxing and filling services
  • Provides ongoing assistance to nursing, medical and other Alex staff concerning the administrative and procedural workings of the health centre 

What you bring: 

  • Current registration with CLPNA required
  • Able to work independently with clients
  • Minimum of two years progressive Nursing experience working with clients with mental health and addictions disorders, homelessness, and poverty
  • Excellent communication, organizational, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skills
  • Able to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team model and innovative outreach service delivery model
  • Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of social services and non-profit services in Calgary is an asset
  • Experience with group facilitation is an asset
  • Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment
  • Current First Aid/CPR is mandatory
