Junior Power BI Developer - Digital Skills for Youth (DS4Y) Intern Position

Calgary Counselling Centre (CCC) changes people’s lives.  We provide counselling for individuals, youth and families of all backgrounds, with barrier free access and no wait-lists.  We are philosophically grounded in research and outcomes measurements and are achieving unparalleled client success; we educate and train counsellors — all within a thriving social enterprise structure.

Calgary Counselling Centre is looking for a talented individual who is interested in broadening their digital skills through a unique learning experience.

Calgary Counselling Centre runs a very sophisticated IT footprint. Most of our servers live in either the Azure environment, or in our server room (On-Prem), with the exception of subscription services that run on the vendor’s platform (e.g., SalesForce). Calgary Counselling Centre is a Microsoft shop, meaning wherever possible, we stick to Microsoft tools, platforms and products to support our business.

As part of CCC’s work we have built up the largest outcomes database in Canada and probably North America. This data dates back to 2003, and lives in our in-house built and maintained solution, SNAP. The data for SNAP lives in a SQL Server database in our Server room.  Calgary Counselling Centre also maintains an accounting solution in Microsoft GP, and an in-house designed and built budgeting solution. The data for both of these applications also reside in a SQL Server database in our server room.

The Project:

Calgary Counselling Centre runs a lot of manual reports to monitor staff, client progress, and financial results across the business. We know where all of our data is and how to access it, and recently we conducted some very successful experiments to understand how much we could extend our reporting by using Microsoft Power BI.

This project will require somebody to run a number of workshops to define the overall company dashboard / sub-dashboards that will reach into our existing database(s) and produce reports that will drill down to the lowest levels of available detail, which is substantial.  (For example, we would like to see reports from SNAP that show, on a Yearly basis, the number and type of client transactions we had. This report would be drillable to month and even day, by Therapist.) Once the hierarchy of the dashboards has been defined and what is expected within them, the developer will then start building out reports in Power BI to satisfy these defined requirements.  We see (approximately) 4 main types of dashboards: Financial, Operational, Clinical and Research. As an example, a tool like Power BI will be able to be configured to show the ‘cost’ of counselling in the Operational dashboard; the Number of sessions rolled up by Counsellor to their Supervisor; by day, week, month, quarter, year; and the Financial dashboard should be able to provide Financial Reporting and comparatives by Year, Quarter, Month etc. The Research dashboard will be used to define new reports that a tool like Power BI can provide by establishing links across multiple tools to find new insights into our business.

Duties & Support:

The successful applicant will work with the senior leadership team and Chief Information Officer (CIO) to define the requirements of the dashboards. As requirements are defined and signed off, the applicant can then dive into the Power BI tool; and start building the dashboard per the requirements specification.

Calgary Counselling Centre will provide expertise to the applicant in the following areas:

  • We will provide manuals and access to a Power BI Expert to help learn how best to set up the tool;
  • We will provide access to the experts who coded our Budgeting and SNAP applications to learn the data structures and how to access them;
  • We will provide manuals and access to our Accountants to understand how the data is structured in Microsoft GP (accounting).

  • Strong knowledge of MS SQL or My SQL
  • Some coursework completed on UI Development & requirements gathering
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Able to work independently and as a team member
  • Attention to detail
  • Understanding of data structures
  • Knowledge of Power BI considered an asset - it is expected that the applicant can learn about Power BI as part of the process
  • Creative thinking – you will be working with us to help create innovative and intuitive user experiences
