Housing Liaison

COMMON PURPOSE

All employees have a responsibility to carry out the vision, mission, and values of Discovery House while adhering to all Agency policies and procedures.  Paramount to this responsibility is demonstrating a ‘client-focused’ approach to all aspects of Discovery House operations and a willingness to cooperate with all Discovery House staff and volunteers in translating these emphases into the planning and delivery of all programs and services.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Housing Liaison will report to the Adult Case Management Team Lead. The primary responsibility is to locate and advocate for housing opportunities and provide ongoing support related to housing and tenancy to clients, landlords and team members using trauma informed approaches.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Housing Duties

  • Recruit and maintain relationships with landlords and property managers.
  • Maintain knowledge and relationships with Calgary area social housing agencies.
  • Locate safe, affordable and sustainable housing for clients of the Community Housing Program.
  • Assist clients with viewing potential homes and completing applications.
  • Review leases with each client and advise accordingly.
  • Prepare requests for damage deposits.
  • Coordinate and/or attend lease signings.
  • Photograph premises and ensure a move in inspection is completed.
  • Monitor financial requests from landlords.
  • Provide on-going support to the client and landlord relationship, as required.
  • Liaise with the team regarding housing status of clients.
  • Coordinate and/or assist with move outs, ensuring that the rental unit is left in good condition.
  • Keep the team lead/program manager advised of client’s housing status.

Administrative Duties

  • Establish and maintain appropriate documentation, record keeping and statistics as required for program standards.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date file notes on any phone call or in-person contact with landlord and/or clients.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge

The successful candidate demonstrates:

  • Understanding of the intersection between domestic violence, poverty and homelessness.
  • Understanding of the Housing First model.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Educational Qualifications and Experience 

  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • Registered Social Workers preferred
  • Understaning of Alberta Residential Tenancies Act
  • Understanding of housing first and harm reduction models
  • Understanding of trauma informed practice
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required

Working Conditions

  • Housing Liaisons work in the community, in client homes, and in an office environment
  • Housing Liaisons work a 40 work week that is Monday through Friday but may be required to flex their hours.
