Harm Reduction Outreach Worker

We are seeking a Harm Reduction Outreach Worker who will be responsible for meeting the harm reduction needs of people who use drugs and those at risk or affected by HIV or HCV in Medicine Hat and area. Working within a harm reduction and human rights based philosophy, this position assists clients to achieve stabilized and sustained health, improve their quality of life and meet their individualized goals. This position requires a passionate professional who is committed to developing supportive and respectful relationships through non-judgmental and client-centered service delivery. The position also includes regular neighbourhood response, outreach and education to ensure community spaces, individuals and businesses have the information and resources to respond to drug-use related concerns.

This is a full-time position (35 hours a week) working Monday to Friday. This position will work primarily from the Medicine Hat Safelink office and Drop-In space. Regular hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The position will report directly to the Team Lead, Safelink .

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide persons who use drugs with harm reduction supplies and supports out of the Safelink Drop-In space
  • Assess client needs in the areas of health, housing, income, social support, legal, drug use and basic needs
  • Connect individuals with supports and resources in the community and advocate on behalf of clients to address barriers to service
  • With the support of the Team Lead and in collaboration with team members, facilitate case discussions to support knowledge development and client-centered care
  • Provide community outreach and education services, including daily response and clean-up of drug-use related debris in community spaces
  • Maintain program statistics, documentation, and participate in ongoing program evaluation and reporting

Qualifications/ Key Competencies:

  • Diploma or Degree in Human Services field and related experience
  • Understanding of harm reduction practice and the needs of persons who use drugs and those at risk or affected by HIV or HCV
  • Foundational knowledge of and orientation to: intersectionality, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive practice frameworks
  • Thorough knowledge of local social service programs and community resources
  • Strong knowledge of mental health and addictions-related issues and interventions
  • High ethical standards and professionalism with a demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries
  • Suicide Intervention, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and First Aid/CPR training is an asset
  • Comfort and experience with public speaking and education activities
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems
  • Excellent at working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Works well under pressure and in stressful situations
  • Physical capability to allow participation in moderate walking, physical labour and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Access to a reliable vehicle is required
