Family Violence Counselor

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) works to provide a client-centered program delivering short term crisis-oriented counseling and long-term counseling to men, women and children experiencing family violence and abuse. CCIS’s Family Violence Counselor supports newcomer families with safety planning and case planning in a culturally responsive manner, building on our clients’ inherent strength and resilience.

 

The Family Violence Counselor will work in collaboration with the CCIS Family Violence Cultural Broker to support immigrant and refugee families and/or individuals experiencing family violence and abuse through a strengths-based approach. The Family Violence Counselor will also collaborate with other community agencies to provide information, education, and guidance, and to increase awareness around the issue of family violence in the context of immigration and cultural diversity.

 

Name of Position: Family Violence Counselor

 

Reports To: Program Coordinator

 

Terms of Employment: Full Time – 40 hours/week with some evening and weekend work required. This is a one year term position ending March 31, 2020.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

·         Provide individual and group counseling to immigrant men, women, and children affected by family violence

·         Work in a variety of settings in the community, including client homes, schools and the office

·         Conduct client assessments and support clients with safety planning, case planning, parenting support, information, and referrals to community resource services

·         Provide evidence-based therapeutic interventions in group and individual settings

·         Develop and implement service plans with measurable objectives based on clinical assessments

·         Provide family violence education and advocacy as needed

·         Advocate and maintain relationships within the agency, and with external professionals to provide a support system for clients

·         Develop partnerships and advocate for victims of abuse coming from different cultural backgrounds in reaching the appropriate services and resources

 

 

Qualifications:

 

·         Masters or Bachelor’s of Social Work with at least two years of related experience in family violence, mental health or addictions community work

·         Registration with either the College of Alberta Psychologists or the Alberta College of Social Workers, or with another related professional discipline

·         Experience in the settlement and integration process of immigrants

·         Knowledge of child development, parent education and the social services system in Calgary

·         Effective counseling skills including the ability to maintain a calm approach, to utilize critical thinking strategies in unpredictable circumstances, and to respond appropriately

·         Knowledge of/experience with cross-cultural communication and cultural diversity

·         An understanding of the service needs of various community and ethno-cultural groups

·         The ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and independently

·         Knowledge and understanding of Social Work practices in a Canadian context

·         Preference will be given to individuals connected to ethno-cultural communities and groups

·         Preference will be given to candidates fluent in both English and another language representative of the target groups being served

·         As travel is required, the successful candidate must have a valid Alberta driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
