The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.  The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of health care that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Community Health Centre, we run a Seniors Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Community Food Centre and Youth Law. 

What we do and why we do it: 

The Alex Community Health Centre’s primary goal is keeping people and communities well. Through comprehensive and

co-ordinated primary care delivery, this multidisciplinary team ensures the client receives timely services, appropriate referrals and the delivery of seamless care. Special attention focuses on reducing accessibility barriers and focusing more on a comprehensive wraparound approach to service delivery. A model of care that addresses the social, health, and financial needs with particular attention towards building wellness and quality of life. 

The EMR/Patient Panel specialist, reporting to the Clinical Operations Coordinator, will be The Alex’s primary resource for the EMR.    This includes all aspects of EMR use, configuration, optimization of systems, and staff training.   In addition, this position will be a vital component of the clinical pathway, in the ongoing management of Alex patient panels, optimizing EMR rules and presets to improve patient care, and provide ongoing support to staff and clinicians.   This position will also be involved with The Alex research and evaluation strategy, and will work with both the EMR and the Alex’s social data platform (CiviCRM) to extract, analyze and present data for clinical, quality improvement, and reporting purposes.  This position, working from administration, is intended to support all Alex programs and clinical operations.   

What you will do:

EMR Resource + Training

  • Act as the primary EMR super-user, including maintenance of user data-base, SMART forms, templates, data field selection, and any other optimization needs
  • Work with system administrator on EMR integration and optimization projects as required
  • Act as primary trainer for new staff and employees using EMR
  • Provide onsite technical support for clinical teams using EMR

Medical Information Extraction and Analysis

  • Using EMR search tools, perform both scheduled and ad hoc information searches for reporting and accountability purposes
  • Information may include, but is not limited to, provider utilization, clinical activity, clinical hours, analysis of clinic sites and practices, medical billing, and other metrics as requested
  • Manage data requests from administration, clinicians, and for quality improvement purposes

Medical Panel Management

  • In collaboration with clinical operations team, and PCN provided patient care coordinators, ensure medical panels are current and accurate to medical home standards
  • Work with clinical teams and clinicians to optimize EMR rules and presets to optimize health screening and fulfill POET functions 

The Alex Social Data Platform (CiviCRM)

  • Working with the Alex’s research and evaluations team, provide operational and technical support for the Alex’s CiviCRM platform
  • Key features include work flow integration of social platform with existing clinic processes, optimization of CiviCRM platform to minimize impact on clinical services, and to maximize the consistency and integrity of data inputs into the system
  • Prior experience with SPSS an asset 

Medical Billing

  • In combination with the clinical operations team and designated clinical teams, be responsible for ensuring medical billing for all physicians and nurse practitioners are complete
  • This will include supporting medical billing in the EMR, resolving rejected billings, completing paper-billing process (for select physicians), and providing general support for clinicians
  • Be responsible for reporting and evaluations associated with medical billing
  • Provide education, training, and support for clinicians as required for medical billing 

General Support for Alex Clinical Operations Team

  • As a team, the Clinical Operations Team will be responsible for supporting the background required functions to augment the front-line clinics
  • These key tasks include:
    • Scanning and linking of documents and incoming faxes
    • Completion of medical billing processes
    • Adjudication of incoming payments, bills, and reconciliation of data received from Alberta Health, the ARP office, and third-party payers
    • Completion of data requests from evaluations, administration, and clinicians

Passion for complex care and inner-city medicine

  • Strong commitment to working with individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness and addictions.
  • Strong skills in health promotion and illness prevention.
  • Ability to build rapport with marginalized individuals, understanding of Mature Minor Doctrine in Alberta, time management skills, ability to work independently 
  • Familiarity with evidence based practices such as Motivational Interviewing, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training, Trauma Informed Care training, Mental Health First Aid, ASSIST, and naloxone administration an asset 

What you bring:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • High-level understanding of Microsoft Excel
  • Strong understanding of medical clinic operations
  • High-level understanding of EMR (e.g. Telus Wolf EMR)
  • Ideally, should have experience as Medical Office Assistant, Physician’s Assistant, or Medical Receptionist
