Employment Counsellor (temporary)

This opportunity is for 40 hours/week for 6 months. An extension is possible.

 

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) is a nonprofit organization that provides settlement and integration services to all immigrants and refugees in Southern Alberta. Since our inception in 1981, we have been a community leader with solid experience in the design and delivery of comprehensive services for our newest neighbours. We deliver these services through a dynamic multi-cultural, multi-denominational and multi-disciplinary team of professionals, who collectively speak over 60 languages.

 

Obtaining sustainable employment is a primary goal for the majority of the clients/students who attend the programs and utilize the services delivered by our Business Employment and Training Services (BETS) division. Our aim is to deliver programs that prepare individuals for economic independence within the realities of today's Canadian workplace. Our experienced and knowledgeable BETS staff and volunteers achieve excellence through the design and delivery of many practical employment and training initiatives.

 

Reporting to our Employment Services Team Lead, our Employment Counsellor provides individual/group employment counselling and career planning services to immigrants and refugees residing in Calgary and area. These services include needs assessments, training on the most recent job search strategies, resume/cover letter/interview preparation, marketing, referrals to employers or to other programs/services, and job placement.

 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Identifying the needs of clients through an employability assessment and developing strategies for addressing those needs
  • Providing direct employment coaching and career planning services, and assisting clients with job search, resume writing and interview preparation
  • Responding to client needs by referring them to other programs and services as needed
  • Facilitating job search workshops
  • Preparing and maintaining required client documentation and reporting
  • Providing statistical reporting as required
  • Providing individual/group vocational counselling/guidance for clients
  • Referring clients to employment opportunities in the community

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Post-secondary degree in Education, Business, Marketing, or Psychology
  • Excellent counselling skills along with well-developed needs assessment, analytical and facilitation skills
  • A strong understanding of the Alberta labour market
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds combined with an appreciation of cultural diversity
  • Computer competency is essential
  • The ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong organizational, time management, documentation, client/case management skills
  • Proficiency in a Second language an asset
