Calgary Health Trust (CHT) believes that everyone should have access to world-class healthcare.  CHT is a donor focused organization that works with donors who are passionate and want to support and transform healthcare in Southern Alberta. Funds raised support innovative projects in research, education, and world-class patient care. 

Through the incredible generosity of our donors, CHT has raised more than $480 million in support of innovative healthcare since 1996. Funds raised impact the Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, South Health Campus, many community health programs and 12 Carewest long-term care facilities in our community.

CHT is currently addressing a vital need in the area of maternal and neonatal care through our Newborns Need Campaign. The campaign is approaching 65% of our $60 million goal and we are getting ready to publically launch the campaign.

Working closely with CHT partners, the CHT looks to identify the areas where philanthropy will have the greatest impact on health care within Calgary immediately and over the long-term.

CHT fundraising efforts focus on three healthcare priorities:

  • developing world-class care;
  • enhancing public and staff education about health care; and
  • improving quality of life by accelerating research into action.

Health care touches all of us and CHT is proud to make a difference to the people they care about in particularly in the areas of:

  • acute care;
  • prevention and harm reduction;
  • chronic pain clinic and outpatient care;
  • palliative care; and
  • labour and delivery and neonatal care.

CHT employs 29 dedicated professionals who work closely with Alberta Health Services (AHS) and community partners to identify key priorities where philanthropic supporters will ensure excellence. 


Reporting to the Vice President, Development, the Director, Strategic Giving is a member of the Development leadership team and will oversee all aspects of the annual giving, mid-level giving, planned giving and prospect research portfolios for CHT. The Director will lead a team of 5 who are responsible for securing and increasing unrestricted revenue and broadening the CHT base of support.

The Director oversees the planning, design, organization and management of all aspects of the strategic giving portfolio (in alignment with the CHT’s overall fundraising objectives), including but not limited to: planned giving, direct mail/email appeals, door to door program, digital fundraising, Giving Day and Crowdfunding. The Director works closely with the development team and marketing/communications specialists to create an integrated strategy that fosters a culture of philanthropy organization wide.

The Director, Strategic Giving provides leadership, direction, and management of relationship management infrastructure (Raiser’s Edge).  The Director will be responsible for ensuring there is a high level of data integrity within the database.  The Director will also act as a key contributor to CHT technology plan/digital strategy. 

The Director will also provide strategic leadership and oversight for the prospect management and prospect research function, direct research staff, and work closely with the Director of Development and Campaigns as a partner in helping CHT achieve its fundraising objectives.

This individual will be required to assess and ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill sets for the Strategic Giving team, identify and manage risk factors, and ensure the appropriate management of Strategic Giving activities. The successful candidate will have a commitment to creativity, a track record of making data driven decisions, and the ability to customize industry standards and best practices to reflect the CHT culture.

Using data analysis, the successful incumbent will work closely with the President & CEO and Executive Leadership team to ensure that all operational and business models align with the mission of the Calgary Health Trust, directly impacting fundraising and donor acquisition and engagement goals.

The common goal of the development team is to build community and philanthropic support by connecting with the organization’s stakeholders (donors, volunteers, AHS partners, staff, and friends) through strategies and programs designed to build engaging and enduring relationships that promote advocacy and philanthropic support for Calgary Health Trust in support of healthcare in Calgary.


  • Supports fund-raising initiatives
  • Responsible for data integrity, data analysis and while ensuring proper usage of the fundraising database (Raiser’s Edge)
  • Leads the strategic giving portfolio:

○        Planned giving and annual giving portfolios, which includes the door to door program, direct marketing, and unrestricted mid-level giving

○        Evaluate the strategic giving program and current processes to determine effectiveness of efforts, while instituting creative and new initiatives to achieve annual goals

  • Leads prospect research team
  • Using data analysis, monitors existing fundraising programs and donor portfolios for effectiveness, offering recommendations to Executive Leadership team on changes to grow strategic giving programs and help CHT fulfill its mandate
  • Responsible for the integration of new technology/digital tools to ensure effective and efficient fundraising practices
  • Ensures accurate information is entered into the database and database is used in accordance to procedures developed in collaboration with all teams
  • Continuously improves the quality of stakeholder and donor data
  • Advises on proper procedures ensuring accurate recording of gifts
  • Ensures compliance with fundraising policies, goals and procedures
  • Selects and prepares data for solicitations, pledge reminders; generates and tracks responses to pledge reminders and solicitations
  • Design, write and edit reports that facilitate the achievement and analysis of all fundraising and constituent relations goals
  • Produce targeted mailing lists for communications, solicitations, invitations, etc. for Development staff and for other organizational departments
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in a related field; advanced degree/diploma preferred
  • 12+ years of related experience and/or training and 5+ years of experience in managing and leading diverse teams; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience in strategic fundraising will be considered
  • Experience with Raisers Edge Fundraising software and preference given to modern database and information system technologies


  • Superb attention to detail, as well as the ability to see the big picture and understand the greater organizational impact of collective details  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Excellent understanding of data administration and management functions (collection, data entry analysis, distribution etc.)
  • An analytical mindset with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be willing to develop and mentor staff, and have the ability to work with and motivate other development professionals and volunteers
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to determine success of various appeals
