The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.  The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. What we do and why we do it: 

The Alex Community Health Centre’s primary goal is keeping people and communities well.  Through comprehensive and coordinated primary care delivery, this multi-disciplinary team ensures the client receives timely services, appropriate referrals, and the delivery of seamless care.  Special attention focuses on reducing accessibility barriers and focusing more on a comprehensive wraparound approach to service delivery.  Our model of care addresses social needs and physical health with particular attention towards building overall wellness and quality of life. 

Working closely with the rest of the Executive team, this position will drive the advancement of programs and services that provide housing support. The Director of Housing Programs is focused on: optimizing program performance, setting strategic vision, ensuring long-term financial sustainability, maintaining compliance with The Alex’s theory of change and evaluation priorities, and helping to lay the foundation for longer-term research goals.  The Director of Housing Programs provides executive leadership to our housing programming at The Alex both internally and externally.  Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this position is focused on providing strategic direction and leadership for the delivery of Housing services utilizing different clinical interventions and housing options to best meet the needs of a vulnerable population.  This role will represent our Housing programs at the Executive level, to the Board and to the community. 

What you will do: 

Operational Performance of Housing Programming

  • Overall Supervision of (4) Housing Programs: Pathways, HomeBase and two residential facilities
  • Accountable for aligning performance and development of programs within our Housing programs to the overall vision and mission of The Alex
  • Via mentorship & coaching, encourage growth and success of team leaders  and oversee a staff complement of more than 80
  • Establish viable program metrics and outcomes that are consistent with The Alex organizational values and theory of change
  • Fiscal accountability for program budgets in excess of $10 million
  • Working with the Director of Strategy, Evaluation and Research, the Director of Housing will be operationally responsible for the rollout and implementation of The Alex’s data collection system through the entire portfolio 

Program Development

  • Provide support, direction and leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Housing programs with a focus on collaborative management strategies to positively affect outcomes
  • Ensure all Housing programs are effectively integrated with other Alex programs, as well as affiliated external programs and consistent with The Alex’s organizational theory of change
  • Provide an evidence-informed and pragmatic lens to future program growth and expansion
  • Develop and update appropriate policies and practice guidelines as necessary 

Community Development and Liaison

  • Establish collaborative partnerships with stakeholders at national, provincial, and peer-organization levels
  • Promote community awareness and pride in programming
  • Serve as an ambassador for The Alex in professional and public settings
  • Investigate and assess new partnerships and collaborations that may benefit Alex clients and programs
  • Work closely with the Director of Community Engagement & Development to ensure programs are positioned for success in the community 

What you will bring: 

  • Master’s degree in discipline relevant to working with our most vulnerable
  • 10 years’ experience in a leadership role, with significant human resources and financial accountability
  • Competency with standard Microsoft Office Suite is essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to confidently represent The Alex in public forums
  • Relevant experience in social service or non-profit sector an asset
  • Ability to plan and manage a large budget
  • Familiarity with an interest in data collection, theories of change, the concept of evidence-based practice, and program evaluation 
  • Knowledge of self-care strategies to ensure resilience
