The Alex: Changing Health. Changing Lives.  The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.  Using a multi-disciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of health care that is accessible, responsive and participatory.

The Alex Health Centre’s primary goal is keeping people and communities well.  Through comprehensive and coordinated primary care delivery, this multi-disciplinary team ensures the client receives timely services, appropriate referrals and the delivery of seamless care.  Special attention focuses on reducing accessibility barriers and focusing more on a comprehensive wraparound approach to service delivery.  Our model of care addresses social needs and physical health with particular attention towards building overall wellness and quality of life. 

The Director of Health Programs provides executive leadership to our health programming at the Alex Community Health Centre.  Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this position is focused on optimizing clinic performance, operational efficiency, client experience, and quality of service of the Alex’s medical clinics and mobile health programs.  The Director of Health Programs will work with the executive team in implementing and executing the strategic vision and ideal model of care throughout the Alex medical programs.  This role will represent our health programs at the Executive level, to the Board and to the community. 

What you will do: 

Operational Performance of Health Programming

  • Accountable for aligning performance and development of programs within our Health Centres to the overall vision and mission of the Alex
  • Inspiring leadership of all medical clinics (Community Clinic, Youth Health Clinic, Seniors Health, Housing Clinic, mobile bus programs), care providers, and clinical teams
  • Support and mentor team members responsible for managing resources 
  • Create and maintain a positive, supportive, and rewarding work environment in health teams via mentorship and coaching, encourage growth and success of health team leaders
  • Create and manage operational budgets 

Program Development

  • Provide support, direction and leadership in the development, implementation and evaluation of health programs with a focus on collaborative management strategies to positively affect health outcomes
  • Ensure all health programs are effectively integrated with other Alex programs, as well as affiliated external programs
  • Support development of medical pathways and protocols by participating in their development, implementation and evaluation
  • Develop and update appropriate policies and practice guidelines as necessary 

Community Development and Liaison

  • Establish collaborative partnerships with stakeholders at national, provincial, and peer-organization levels
  • Promote community awareness and pride in programming
  • Serve as an ambassador for the Alex in professional and public settings
  • Investigate and assess new partnerships and collaborations that may benefit Alex clients and programs
  • Work closely with the Director of Community Engagement & Development to ensure program sustainability and explore avenues of growth for the Alex 

What you will bring: 

  • Recommended Master’s degree in relevant discipline
  • Exceptional leadership skills; proven experience leading teams, projects and initiatives
  • Executive-level experience in healthcare practice setting, or applicable non-profit setting
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build and maintain effective internal and external relationships
  • High level of integrity and dependability, with a results-oriented approach
  • The confidence and ability to interact effectively with all levels of management, staff, Board and external stakeholders
  • Ability to plan and manage a $10 million budget
  • Knowledge of EMR systems, structure, and contents and the ability to analyze and critically evaluate the data
