Vecova provides a wide range of services and supports in the Calgary region, including the Bow Valley Corridor, for persons with disabilities and the community. Vecova provides services and supports through an Integrated Service Model to meet the changing needs of our consumers so they may reach their fullest potential and benefit from the highest possible quality of life. These services are provided to consumers of all ages and abilities with varying levels of support - from some support to extensive support. Vecova employs:

  • a supports approach that recognizes that individual needs change over time and that supports must change as well; and
  • a citizen-centred approach to service planning to ensure our consumers work towards their personal outcomes.

The Opportunity

Vecova is seeking an experienced leader to join the Senior Leadership Team, as the Director of Employment Services.  The Director of Employment Services will lead and manage a diverse range of employment services for persons with disabilities and Albertans through the Employment First approach to support people to find and maintain competitive employment with appropriate supports to succeed in the workplace, and to connect with and support employers with hiring competent and dedicated employees.  

Specifically this position will oversee a range of services, which include:

  • Supporting people through career exploration and planning, job search design and job skills training, work placement, mentoring and on-the-job and retention support, employer connections and workplace integration.
  • Supporting employers through education, cultural and sensitivity training, support on how to communicate with persons with disabilities, information and education on best practices in hiring and supporting persons with a disabilities in the workplace.
  • Supporting youth and their families through a youth transition and work experience program to assist youth and their families in successful transition into adulthood and gaining the necessary work experience skills to find and maintain employment.
  • Operating enterprises that reflect the vision of an inclusive community and provide employment for persons with a disability or barriers to employment. These enterprises have a social impact and generate revenue that is invested into Vecova’s services and programs and include:
    • A Beverage Container Recycling Depot (Bottle Depot)
    • A Bottle Pickup Service
    • A series of competitive business contracts (e.g., Calgary Airport Authority, the University of Calgary)

The Director of Employment Services will be fluent in the operational requirements for enterprises and have a good understanding of the multi-dimensional aspects of delivering a robust employment services to persons with disabilities. As the leader of high performing teams in a fast-paced dynamic environment, the Director of Employment Services will build strong relations and drive results aligned with Vecova’s mission and vision.

Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and executing business plans for Employment Services that support Vecova’s strategic direction and are responsive to change.
  • Leading the operations management team, building robust human resource plans to attract, develop, retain and manage workforce needs for Employment Services.
  • Implementing a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values lifelong learning, social innovation, social enterprises, research and partnerships.
  • Cultivating relationships with government, other nonprofit organizations and the business sector to support and grow Vecova’s employment initiatives.
  • Implementing evaluative metrics to measure the effectiveness of Employment Services and developing plans to improve the outcomes of these services.
  • Identifying and implementing measures to increase operational efficiencies in Employment Services.
  • Preparing and forecasting budgets on a 3-year cycle, identifying revenues and expenditures projections to sustain service delivery and operations, addressing capital assets requirements and supporting Vecova’s financial health and sustainability plan.
  • Managing financial resources effectively, ensuring fiscal targets are met or appropriate corrective action is taken.
  • Enhancing financial stability of Vecova and Employment Services through the diversification of funding sources and services offered. 
  • Identifying and executing plans to grow and scale Employment Services for current or new consumer groups.
  • Identifying and securing resources to fund growth and procure or replace capital assets.
  • Implementing effective systems to meet and exceed quality assurance industry standards for employment services.
  • Ensuring Employment Services operations are in compliance with legislative requirements and meet contractual obligations; and effectively managing or mitigating risks associated with these operations.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor Degree in Business or Social Sciences with a minimum of five years of progressively more complex managerial experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with a focus on employment development services and business operations.

The Director of Employment Services will also have the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of disability services and non-profit sectors.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and industry standards impacting business operations.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and effectively managing resources.
  • Ability to thrive and adapt to changing situations and overcome obstacles.
  • A passion for Vecova’s vision and mission.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with a proven ability to support strategic decision-making.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of successful marketing and business practices.
  • A proven track record of managing the financial and delivery of service operations.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and results-oriented environment.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with a variety of stakeholder audiences and possess exceptional leadership qualities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
