Position Description:

Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association is a vibrant, inclusive community centre offering community-based programming, childcare, sports and recreation facilities, and private hall rentals for business functions and special events.


The Controller is required to maintain accurate financial records of the Association, to build and monitor annual budgets, to provide timely reporting and to advise the Executive Director on the financial position of the Association.



  • Financial
    • Assist in the preparation of the annual financial statements (for FCSS and the consolidated HSCA) in conjunction with the auditor,
    • Prepare corporate tax returns,
    • To consult with all divisions concerning budget requirements, and prepare preliminary budgets for the agency,
    • To administer the financial reports related to Breakopen and Casino,
    • To prepare monthly income and expense reports for the Association,
    • Prepare ad hoc reporting for executive director, board of directors, staff, and external clients, customers, or agencies as required,
    • Responsible for the payroll for all employees as well as the yearly T4’s,
    • Responsible for accounts receivable and payable ledgers, general ledger, monthly intergroup charges, bank deposits and reconciliation,
    • Cash management and reporting by preparation of monthly balance sheets,
    • Attend finance committee meetings in evenings once per month,
    • Review and maintain processes to ensure the integrity of the financial information systems,
    • Prepare all cheques for signature with appropriate supporting documentation,
    • Ensure all documentation is properly filed
  • Administrative
    • Staff resource to the Finance Committee,
    • Participate as part of the senior staff, reporting on financial issues and participate in the decision-making process for administrative matters of the Association,
    • Responsible for the registration of group health benefits for the staff.
  • Other
    • Additional assignments as directed by the Executive Director


  • Bachelor Degree in accounting or related field
  • 5-10 years experience in accounting/finance/bookkeeping
  • Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Extensive experience with data entry and record keeping
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and accounting/payroll systems
  • Experience in services related to payroll (i.e. submitting payroll taxes)
  • Experience in preparing organization wide financial statements and budgets for a variety of users
  • Non-profit experience preferred
