Community Broker (40 hours/week - One Year Contract for PAT Leave Coverage)

Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (CCIS) is a nonprofit organization that provides settlement and integration services to all immigrants and refugees in Calgary and Southern Alberta. With over 35 years of solid community experience, 70 active programs, and comprehensive wraparound support, CCIS ensures that our services respond to the needs of ethnically diverse communities within Calgary and area.

CCIS, in partnership with Calgary and Area Children’s Services (CS), established a Cultural Brokerage Program (CCBP) in 2015 with the overall objective to increase collaboration, engagement, and partnership with culturally diverse communities in Calgary, and to strengthen community capacity within Calgary’s multicultural communities.

Our Cultural Brokerage Program is composed of a team of diverse individuals in the roles of Cultural Broker as well as the Community Broker. The Cultural Brokerage team operates in Connect Children’s Services (CS) multi-service team locations across the City that have been identified as serving specific ethno-cultural populations.

Reporting to the Coordinator of the Cultural Brokerage Program, our Community Broker provides training, education and advice to promote and enhance cultural competency within Children’s Services (CS) and community partners, and to assist our program staff in becoming more familiar with matters of diversity. The Community Broker is also responsible for supporting service design and delivery that are based on the shared values and desired experiences of the clients that we serve.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiate community outreach and provide communities with information about Children’s Services and the Cultural Brokerage Program in order to set goals for collaboration
  • Engage communities through the provision of capacity-building activities
  • Ensure relationship building and action planning with diverse culture and faith communities
  • Connect Children’s Services (CS) with different ethno-cultural and faith communities
  • Educate cultural communities on the mandate of Children’s Services and systems expectations
  • Act as a Community Broker between CS, families and communities
  • Assist families, and cultural brokers, to connect with their communities
  • Build cultural capacity of CS through education, workshops, meetings
  • Develop and deliver trainings for CS and other service providers
  • Ensure ongoing consultations with communities
  • Develop and execute an effective community outreach plan
  • Maintain exceptional relationships with CS, Brokers and communities
  • Support the objectives of the Family and Children’s Services Division through cooperative interaction with fellow colleagues

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in community outreach or related
  • Lived experience and working knowledge of the settlement and integration process
  • Established facilitation and workshop design and delivery experience
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of cultural education programs
  • Understanding and appreciation of the complex needs of diverse populations
  • Knowledge of the various ethno-cultural and faith groups in Calgary
  • Effective and dynamic communication and facilitation skills
  • Experience and ability to collaborate effectively with the Community
  • Excellent organization skills and self-starting tendencies
  • Advanced technological skills
  • As travel is required our successful candidate will have a current Alberta Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Some after hours and weekend work is required
