Communications Coordinator

Youth Central is a dynamic, creative and energetic non-profit organization, with the mission to “inspire, engage and celebrate youth through community participation.”  This full-time Communications Coordinator position will be responsible for the communications for the organization as well as the operation of the Youth Are Awesome (YAA) program.  Youth Are Awesome is a blog-based website (www.youthareawesome.com) run by youth for youth, focusing on the great things the youth are doing and the great things they could be doing in Calgary.  

 

This position reports directly to the Program Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Communications

  • Ensure key messages are consistent throughout the organization
  • Implement communication-related tactics from Youth Central’s 3-year Strategic Plan
  • Maintain and track Youth Central’s social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn)
  • Writing and distributing press releases and media advisories
  • Write and distribute Youth Central’s monthly e-newsletter
  • Create Youth Central’s online Annual Report and printed Executive Summary
  • Support staff with graphic design needs for programs and Youth Central, in conjunction with Program Director
  • Follow brand guidelines (colours, fonts, photos) and seek opportunities to strengthen brand presence
  • Develop and maintain media relationships and update media contact lists
  • Maintain the Youth Central website and update blog
  • Seek opportunities for Youth Central to be spotlighted in the community
  • Take and edit photos at various program events
  • Delegate photography opportunities for volunteer projects to interested youth
  • Participate in the  Communications Committee of the Board of Directors, at the discretion of the Executive Director

Youth Are Awesome (YAA)

  • Be the primary contact and spokesperson for the YAA program
  • Ensure the YAA website is functioning and that youth volunteers are actively blogging
  • Facilitate youth committee meetings, while motivating, engaging, inspiring the committee members
  • Liaise with existing and potential partners in developing future directions of YAA
  • Promote the YAA website to potential partners/collaborating agencies in Calgary
  • Manage Jr. Editors and ensure blog posts are appropriate
  • Manage and update the YAA website when necessary
  • Recruit new YAA youth volunteers

 

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post-secondary education and 1 - 3 years of related experience
  • Experience with graphic design (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop), and WordPress
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in managing social media platforms
  • Experience with video creation and editing is considered an asset
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Personally motivated and dependable
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task
  • Experience working with youth, and enjoys working with youth of all ages
  • Administrative skills
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including some work on evening and weekends
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude!
