The role of the Communications & Community Specialist is to expand Between Friends’ brand identity and to position Between Friends as a leader in our community.  The successful candidate will work within a strong team environment to provide support in the development, implementation and evaluation of communications strategies for Between Friends’ internal and external stakeholders and audiences.  Working collaboratively with the Fund Development, Membership and Operations Teams, this individual will create digital and print content and maintain social media platforms in order to effectively listen to and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders as well as members of the public.



This position reports to the CEO.






  • Working collaboratively with the Between Friends team, this role will help to establish the organization’s “story” and build the messaging and programs required to effectively communicate all aspects of that story to key stakeholders, including; members and their families, volunteers, staff, donors, as well as the general public.
  • Remain current on trends within the non-profit sector in order to strengthen Between Friends’ ability to remain relevant to its communities and by doing so support the Fund Development Team to secure funding and sponsorship opportunities that support Between Friends’ membership, services and programs.
  • Research, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate marketing and communications strategies and plans to align with the organization’s business objectives, brand and values.
  • Manage and update the Communications Plan and implement communication strategies that align with strategic and annual goals.
  • Support each function of the Between Friends team by brainstorming and creating new ideas for fundraising, events, and campaigns, and implementing communications strategies to support said activities
  • Identify opportunities/possible resources and provide guidance on marketing and communication issues, and aid in the creation of new processes.
  • Monitor and facilitate conversations (both online and otherwise) with stakeholders to increase awareness of Between Friends’ mission, vision, values, and success within the community
  • Manage Between Friends creative/communications vendor network to ensure the highest quality deliverables, brand alignment, consistent messaging, as well as budget alignment
  • Coordinate, implement, track, evaluate and report on campaigns and activities to increase the profile of Between Friends.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to understand business activities and communication requirements and write, produce/cause to be produced and distribute key communication materials; including, but not limited to Annual Impact Reports, fundraising/event materials, donor reports/recognition materials, videos, banners, program flyers, brochures, advertisements, training materials, apparel, recognition items, postcards, program guides, flyers, newsletters, business cards, awards materials, etc.
  • Work with administrative staff to develop and manage a set of detailed databases that will support targeted/segmented messaging i.e. members and families, staff and volunteers, donors.


Website/Social Media

  • Plan and create engaging content across a variety of platforms including, but not limited to Between Friends’ website and social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter)
  • Track the impact of Between Friends website and social media platforms and adjust content accordingly to promote Between Friends presence and personality.


Budgeting & Financial Reporting

  • Assist with the development of the annual communications budget
  • Monitor the annual communications budget and provide variance explanations on a quarterly basis
  • Complete a semi-annual budget reforecast related to anticipated communications expenditures


  • Working collaboratively with the Fund Development, Operations and Membership Teams, coordinate, plan and implement Between Friends Annual Awards and AGM.
  • Exhibit at local conferences and events to raise awareness of Between Friends as requested
  • As necessary, act as a community liaison with other organizations and participate in relevant community activities that further the goals and objectives of Between Friends.
  • Create and continue relationships with external partners and contacts, in regards to communications and media relationships. 
  • Coordinate Between Friends’ internal United Way of Calgary and Area campaign and Speaker program.
    • Represent Between Friends as a United Way speaker
    • Attend Speaking engagements to promote and raise awareness of Between Friends to donors and funders.
    • Ensure agency partners are recognized appropriately and as per contractual agreements.
    • Develop an educational program and a database of “ambassadors” to speak on behalf of Between Friends.

Media Relations


  • Develop and maintain media relationships including building and maintaining a media database, media monitoring and reporting.
  • Responsible for writing and distributing press releases media advisories, backgrounders, fact sheets, articles, key messaging, speeches, PSA’s, media pitches and coordinating requests.
  • Coordinate spokesperson training and prepare others for media interviews and public speaking engagements.



  • Provide communication strategies, advice and training to the board of directors as required.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning process, upon request


  • Complete program visits to stay connected to Between Friends programming and to provide oversight and leadership to program personnel
  • Attend program special events as requested 
  • Attend the camp cookouts at Camp Bonaventure, to promote agency awareness and recognition of volunteer groups.  
  • Ensure all program staff and volunteers are aware of Between Friends key messaging and provide all necessary personnel with the appropriate traiing, information and materials. 


  • Provide appropriate feedback to Between Friends team members.
  • Actively participate in and chair, when requested, Between Friends meetings.
  • Provide program coverage in the absence of Program staff and/or volunteers when required.


Provide other services that may be reasonably requested by the CEO to contribute to the achievement of the organization’s objectives. 


Experience and Qualifications:

  • Relevant diploma or degree with 2 – 4 years’ experience in a related position
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to deliver creative and engaging content for all communications channels including print, web, social and media

  • Experience and ability to utilize and analyze social media platforms tools including the development and execution of a dynamic social media editorial calendar
