Communication/Special Projects Assistant

Under the direction of the Executive Director or her designate, the Communication/Special Projects Assistant will provide support with administrative work and communications for the organization and its projects. This position requires a highly-organized self-starter who can work with project/program staff and stakeholders to achieve desired goals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Contributing to the day-to-day operations of the organization, with a focus on administrative work and communication activities related FESA’s special projects.
  • Assisting with the desk-top publishing of FESA curricula and other instructional materials.
  • Assisting with the development and writing of proposals and reports.
  • Contributing to the implementation of FESA’s Calgary programing and the Going the Distance project’s, communication strategies.
  • Supporting program and fund development objectives by contributing to strategic and targeted communication and campaign activities.
  • Providing support for fundraising and training events.
  • Assisting with office operations and administration as required.

Qualifications & Skills:


  • At least two years of experience in a related role, performing a full-range of administrative and communications duties.
  • Experience with desk top publishing.
  • Exceptional editing skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills (written and spoken), including skill in writing for varied audiences – e.g. learners, government, practitioners, academics, funders, and public
  • Knowledgeable about social media and communication practices and strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate professionally and diplomatically.
  • Strong organizational, time, and project management skills.
  • Must be a pro-active self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team and/or independently.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Experience working, or volunteering, in a non-profit or charity an asset
  • Proficiency in Adobe Cloud products including InDesign, Photoshop, and other graphic design software will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, and independently manage multiple, diverse, and competing priorities while meeting deadlines. 
  • Desire for professional development and furthering one’s knowledge and expertise.
