Child Support Worker - Team Lead

Child Care Support - Team Lead

This position exists to ensure that children receive quality care while they are admitted at the Children’s Cottage.

The individual will advocate on behalf of families to informal and formal community support systems including Child and Family Services. This position will act as a liaison to the Crisis Nursery in Bridgeland. This position provides supervision, leadership and mentorship to child and family support workers.

The Hours for this position are 1:30pm – 9:30pm Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week


1. Leadership role

  • Direct Report for Child Care Workers
  • Assists with Supervision of Child Support Workers
  • Supports the Crisis Nursery Manager in the human resource management of child support positions.
  • Participates in orientation for new employees, students and volunteers.
  • Participates in supervision and evaluations of staff.
  • Maintains a motivational work environment.
  • Assists child care staff in achieving success in areas they may have direction to improve upon.

 2. Interacts with children:  Carries an adjusted child care work load.

  • Sets up a daily child care plan with staff to ensure quality child care.
  • Ensures daily that the Crisis Nursery is providing a safe environment for the children, staff, and volunteers. Communicates with Manager as necessary.

           In Conjunction with Child Support Workers Provides the following:

  • Assists children in their daily routines keeping in mind the child’s developmental stage.
  •  Assists children to cope with feelings of separation from their parents.
  • Make daily observations of the physical and emotional wellbeing of the children.  Report observations to the nurse.
  •  Administers medications and treatments under the supervision or approval of the nurse on duty.
  • Completes assessment of children using an in-depth developmental screening tool.

3. Interacts with parents:

  • Takes phone calls offering non-judgmental assistance to all families pursuing help from the Children’s Cottage when Family Support Intake is not available. Determines which service is most appropriate for the family – Volunteer Day Care, Crisis Nursery or Infant Respite.
  • If family is admitted to the Crisis Nursery - Interviews parents upon arrival and discharge in an empathic and supportive manner when Family Support Intake and Family Coaches are not working. The admission and discharge notes will be interim until a Family Support Intake worker or Family Coach is in the next day.
  • When a family requests Volunteer Day Care or Infant Respite ensure documentation is completed and Family Support Intake Worker is made aware the next day so there is appropriate follow up.
  • Reports to parents on how their child is adapting.  Discuss specifics of the child’s daily activity.
  • Completes Health Check at admission and ensures that health checks are done by other child care staff at admission.
  • Collaborates with Family Support re necessary referrals.

4. Interacts with Child and Family Services Staff:

  • Receives child(ren) from Child and Family Services at the Crisis Nursery in a caring and comforting manner.
  • Collaborates with FSW to gain all necessary information to best care for the child(ren).
  • Reports to worker regularly on how child is adapting to the new environment.

5. Interaction with Family Support Team/Family Coaches:

  • Act as liaison between child care team and family support team to ensure all relevant child information is forwarded.

 6. Record Keeping:

  • Documents all interactions with parents and workers.
  • Documents relevant interactions with children.
  • Documents all significant assessment information.
  • Inputting into ETO database.
  • Reviewing staff input into ETO database.

 7. Provides a mentorship role for new staff and students. Orientates new staff members and supervises students during their practicum.

 8. Facilitates appropriate communication with community agencies and manager/Chief Executive Officer/Director of Programs during the weekday hours.

 9. Oversees and assists childcare volunteers as they provide care for children.

 10. Participates in other program-related areas as assigned by the Manager, Director of Programs, Chief Executive Officer or the Board of Directors.

 11. Maintains a valid First Aid/CPR and Suicide intervention certificate and participates in yearly Aboriginal and Diversity trainings.


  • Degree in child care or related human service field; diploma with additional years of relevant experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of five years experience working with infants/young children and their families.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a supervisory role.
  • Thorough knowledge of early childhood development and experience with developmental screening
  • Understanding of child protection and the Calgary Child and Family Services system.
  • Knowledge of community services and resources for families and young children.
  • Skill with brief solution focused approach to supporting families, crisis intervention, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in use of computers including ability to document using a data base; knowledge of Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) client data base is an asset.
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification.
