Basic Needs Coordinator


POSITION SUMMARY: The Basic Needs Coordinator will work with the staff and volunteer team to ensure a well-managed basic needs program. She will ensure adequate resources are available, provide training, support and back up to volunteer service providers, engage with partners and community, and participate in planning and evaluation initiatives to ensure flexible and responsive direct assistance, referrals and any other services which meet women's needs. She will work within our unique Community Capacity Building Peer Model and promising practices centered around Inclusion, Trust-based practice and Reciprocity.

The Women’s Centre of Calgary is a non-profit support and resource centre for women. Our mission is to be every woman’s place for support, connections and community.

 Primary duties:

  • Engage with women and volunteers and nurture community building in all aspects of your work
  • Provide information, choice and opportunities to women seeking to access services and provide basic needs support in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Help to ensure that volunteers are provided with initial and ongoing training.
  • Assist practicum students and volunteers with service delivery as needed.
  • Develop and maintain resources required by volunteers to provide service delivery and support programming
  • Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with other service agencies.
  • Represent the Women’s Centre in the community at meetings and events, on networks and coalitions.
  • Ensures daily statistics are accurate and compiled into monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
  • Create an environment that is inclusive of all women, respectful and free of discrimination.
  • Provide backup with whatever is needed to maintain a positive and supportive environment at the Centre

Qualification and skills:

  • Commitment to improving the status of women and knowledge of a Gendered + lens
  • Ability to work individually and within a team
  • Ability to work within an open working environment with flexibility and adaptability
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply principles of trauma informed practice and reflective practice
  • Experience with conflict resolution and difficult situations
  • Knowledge of issues around accessibility and diversity issues.
  • Ability to coach, train and support volunteers and staff
  • Demonstrated strong communication, problem solving and multi-tasking skills
  • Knowledge of non-profits and social services
  • Demonstrated organizational, mobilization and planning skills
  • Ability to accommodate flexible work schedule including 2 evening shifts
  • Multilingual skills an asset
  • Minimum five years of experience working with women in the community
  • Minimum knowledge of Microsoft, including but not limited to Excel
  • Postsecondary education
