After School Program Facilitator

The Families Matter Society of Calgary strives to promote optimal child development and build resilience in youth, adults and families. Front Runners offers after-school programming in two schools located in Marlborough Park and in Bowness, with children in grades 4-6. The Front Runners program focuses on building positive social skills, confidence, healthy habits, self-esteem and leadership.

 The After-School Program Facilitator works closely with the Program Coordinator to design and deliver four weekly after-school sessions throughout the school year. The After-School Program Facilitator supports the Families Matter vision by ensuring that our program teaches and reinforces important life skills for youth participating in the program.

Contract Position – August 26, 2019 to June 26, 2020

19 hours per week, renewable annually

Key Responsibilities

  • Program planning and recruitment of youth participants in conjunction with school staff.
  • Support the development and facilitation of a variety of developmentally appropriate activities for the youth program.
  • Deliver programming to youth with a focus on building leadership skills, self-esteem, health awareness, confidence, effective communication and positive peer relationships.
  • Observe and monitor the development and behaviors of youth, and make recommendations and programming changes accordingly.
  • Create an active environment that promotes physical literacy.
  • Incorporate positive discipline and respectful behavior management techniques.
  • Ensure that the learning environment is well-maintained, safe, organized and engaging for youth.
  • Work together with other members of the Families Matter team and community partners to deliver integrated support services to youth and their families.

 Qualifications & Experience

  • A Certificate or Diploma related to Human Services from a recognized post-secondary institution, preferably in Education, Social Work, Child & Youth Care, or a similar field of study
  • Direct youth programming experience, including working with external service providers and community partners
  • Demonstrated confidence engaging a variety of youth in group-based programming.

 Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to engage with children aged 9-12, and to provide positive role modelling
  • Cultural competence and sensitivity in dealing with a diverse population of participants
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills with youth, families, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, time management, and organizing abilities
  • Creativity, energy and a sense of playfulness

 Other Requirements

  • Must complete a criminal record check and a child intervention check with satisfactory results
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level B certification
  • Ability to travel for work in locations in both NE and NW Calgary (Marlborough Park, Bowness)


Work Hours

  • 19 hours per week:
    • 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm, Tuesday and Friday
    • 11:00 am – 5:30 pm, Wednesday and Thursday
    • Work days will follow the Calgary Catholic School Calendar

Wage: $18 per hour
