Elder Abuse Social Worker – Prevention (HR311)

Part Time Regular Position (0.6 FTE, 22.5 hours per week)

$32,012 - $37,664 (to commensurate with education)

Position Summary

As part of an Elder Abuse Support Program, the Social Worker’s primary responsibility is to provide short-term community support to individuals at risk of being victims of elder abuse. Effectively engaging clients through the process of assessment, supportive counselling and referrals, the Social Worker must use best practices, follow ethical guidelines and respect the clients’ uniqueness and right to self-determination while keeping in mind an individual’s right to be protected. This role also provides professional consultation and system navigation support to other professionals supporting victims of elder abuse within the community. Additionally, the successful candidate of the competition may be required to provide social work support to the clients that are seen by the Elder Abuse Response Team.

This position works closely with a variety of multi-disciplinary teams and provides support to older adults and their families in the context of preventing and promoting awareness of elder abuse.


  • Performs intake which may include referrals to appropriate services or recommendation for intervention.
  • Works with a variety of agencies and systems to review referrals and identify risks of elder abuse.
  • Once intake is complete, assesses the individual’s circumstances, presenting issues, general capabilities, risks and support systems to gain a clear understanding of the individual’s situation.   Working alongside other professionals involved with the individual within the community.
  • Develops goals and a service plan with the individual’s and/or family’s input. 
  • Acts as an elder abuse specialist supporting  individual(s) and liaises with other service providers and professionals as well as provides supported referrals to programs or services
  • Provides information and/or referrals to appropriate community resources to the individual(s) and/or family members as required
  • Engages in supportive counselling to assist the individual(s) in dealing with their situation and other issues such as grief and loss, health changes, family dynamics, and other age related issues. 
  • Develops and delivers presentations and workshops to professionals about elder abuse
  • Participates in community engagement, awareness and capacity building particularly in the area of elder abuse.
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with internal partners, team partners and referral agencies. 
  • Retains required program statistics, outcome data and information necessary for annual year-end reports.
  • This position may also require you to support the activities of the Elder Abuse Response Team.


Qualifications & Experience

This is a position that requires a combination of outreach/system navigation skills as well as advanced clinical skills and confidence in professional consultation particularly in the area of assessment and case management relating to issues of elder abuse

  • Master’s degree in Social Work is preferred and active registration with ACSW or the ability to become registered with the Alberta Association of Social Workers is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working either with older adults or with victims of abuse.
  • Well-developed sense of professional ethics and strong understanding of the importance of client confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals, dyads, triads, families, and teams.
  • Working knowledge of Calgary and Alberta resources for older adults.
  • Demonstrated commitment to growth and development by staying current in professional literature, research and practices.
  • This position requires the worker to meet with clients in a community setting while assessing risk and meeting safety requirements. 
  • The successful candidate must undergo a vulnerable sector police check and additional police clearances.
  • A driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.
