Seasonal Sales Associate


Job Title:                     Seasonal Sales Associate (September-December) Crowchild


Reports to:                 Manager and Assistant Manager in absence of Manager


Working Hours:          Hourly during normal area business hours, including evenings and weekends (as arranged with Manager) 15-20 hour/week


Job Purpose:

The Sales Associate will assist the other staff and volunteers in the day to day operations such as sales, customer service, displaying/replenishing merchandise and receiving stock


Duties and Responsibilities:


As directed by the Manager and Assistant Manager in absence of Manager (Listed duties are illustrative, not restrictive):


  • Primary responsibility is to deliver good customer service:                                                 
  • Welcome and host customers in the store and at offsite sales
  • Learn and share Mission, artisan stories and product features
  • Assist customers in finding items using GUEST Sales Model
  • Act on customer requests with a sense of urgency
  • Keep customers fully informed by providing timely updates of products and availability
  • Consistently follow through on commitments
  • Answer customer calls
    • Process Webstore Orders when they 1) arrive in store or 2) are claimed by the customer
    • Operate the computerized cash register and inventory system.  Handle returns, gift cards, donation forms, customer complaints and special requests.
    • Assist with merchandising and restocking/refreshing product displays
    • Work with volunteers and other staff to build sales
    • Develop a good working relationship with staff and volunteers
    • Assist in keeping the store neat, clean and attractive to customers
    • Assist in the receiving and unpacking of inventory, paying close attention to details
    • Maintain operations in the store in the absence of other staff
    • Assist with promotional events, educational events and offsite sales
    • Open and close the store
    • Perform other duties as requested by store manager and assistant manager
    • Adhere to the Ten Thousand Villages Personnel Policies
    • Adhere to the Ten Thousand Villages Policies and Procedures


    Job Specifications: 

    • Knowledge and strong support of the mission of Ten Thousand Villages and the principles of Fair Trade 
    • Experience and/or training in retail sales
    • Experience in working with volunteers
    • Proven leadership ability
    • Proven good oral and written communication skills in English
    • Enjoy dealing with customers and meeting/working with people
    • Merchandising experience
    • Ability to work unsupervised
    • General computer literacy
    • Self-motivated, pro-active thinker
    • Strong organizational skills

    • Wages are calculated at an hourly rate.  Record of hours worked will be recorded on a calendar and submitted to the Human Resources Coordinator at Mennonite Central Committee Alberta by the Manager.  Payment is remitted at the end of each month by direct deposit. 


    Other Job Information:

    • The Sales Associate reports directly to the Manager – Global Village Crafts Society o/a Ten Thousand Villages.  Over-time work is expected from time to time in the daily operations of the store and is cyclical, dependent on busy buying seasons.  Overtime shall be paid in the form of time off taken in-lieu or at the hourly rate as determined by the Manager.
