Residential Addictions Counselor- Nights

Responsibilities and Duties

Clinical

  • Be cognizant of and demonstrate conduct supportive of the Philosophy, Mission, Vision, and Policies of Aventa.
  • Ensure, overall, that the operation of the residential facility is safely maintained.
  • Monitor and supervise the activities and behaviours of clients and respond in supportive, meaningful ways.
  • Maintain safety and security of the residence by:
    • Accounting for all clients at strategic times such as curfew, bed check hours, during or after fire drills, and meal hours
    • Observe clients self-administer their own medications
    • Searching clients’ belongings as they arrive at the residence for admission as well as during room searches
    • Conduct drug and alcohol screens and collaborating documentation
    • Monitoring visitors and ensuring that appropriate behaviour prevails during the visiting hours
  • Collaborate with other Aventa staff and Management for joint case management decision processing that will best facilitate reintegration of clients into the community, meetings, support groups, employment and any other ‘affect’ life areas.
  • Facilitate or support all evening/weekend client meetings.
  • Observe clients self-administer their own medications as required and record on the client’s individual Medication Observation Record (MOR) sheet.
  • Coordinate the compilation of the chore lists, journals and client responsibilities’ lists.  Ensure completion of tasks and fulfillment of responsibilities at requisite times to satisfactory standards.
  • Respond to incoming calls in a manner that respects the clients’ needs and the confidential nature of our residential operation.
  • Discharge clients when circumstances, consistent with the Philosophy and Policies, dictate.
  • Communicate regularly with Aventa Staff by phone, e-mail, writing in the communication log and during shift change times regarding client issues such as at risk clients, notable behaviors from the reporting day, crisis management, household maintenance, household or office supplies and for any other areas of concern or unusual occurrences.
  • Compile thorough, concise documentation regarding clients, notable behaviors during each shift.
  • Make appropriate, concise entries in the communication book intended for all residential staff and management to read.
  • Review email, memo book, client notes and entries in the communication book during shift.
  • Be cognizant of the special provisions regarding clients such as pregnant , NWT, etc..
  • Foster integral and collaborative team membership that is supportive and respectful of the Aventa team overall.
  • Attend all Residential Staff Meetings and other related meetings and functions to which invited.
  • Be apprised of the scheduled shifts and of the ‘on-call’ person during each shift.
  • Complete all scheduled chores for the shift.
  • Conduct/complete monthly fire drills or as required.
  • Familiarize new employees, students, and volunteers, who have been hired/accepted to work at the residence, with the requirements, expectations and responsibilities of the job.  If requested by your supervisor, provide an evaluation of the students’ job performances.
  • Represent Aventa in the community as requested and in a manner consistent with the Philosophy and Policies of the agency.

    Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • Diploma or degree in a related human services field
  • Experience working in a residential addiction setting
  • Addictions knowledge
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Clear Criminal Record check and Child Welfare check and well as Federal Clearance is required upon hiring
  • Required training: Standard First Aid, CPR and Suicide Intervention Training
