The Alex Community Health Centre

One-Year Term Position 

What we do and why we do it: 

The Alex Community Health Centre’s primary goal is keeping people and communities well.  Through comprehensive and coordinated primary care delivery, this multi-disciplinary team ensures the client receives timely services, appropriate referrals, and the delivery of seamless care.  Special attention focuses on reducing accessibility barriers and focusing more on a comprehensive wraparound approach to service delivery.  Our model of care addresses social needs and physical health with particular attention towards building overall wellness and quality of life. 

The Director of Community and Social Initiatives (CSI) is a one-year position responsible for uniting and enhancing the non-healthcare direct client services at The Alex.  Working closely with the directors of housing, research and evaluation, development, and health, this position will drive the advancement of programs that inter-connect with our health and housing streams to improve client well-being. The Director of CSI will be focused on: optimizing program performance, setting strategic vision, ensuring long-term financial sustainability, maintaining compliance with The Alex’s theory of change and evaluation priorities, and helping to lay the foundation for longer-term research goals.  Understanding that the portfolio is very diverse, the Director of CSI should expect to be well supported by content experts in each individual accountable program. 

What you will do: 

Operational Performance of Programs

  • Direct supervision of a range of inter-connected programs, including the Community Food Centre, Indigenous relations, YouthLaw, and social programming at The Alex
  • Fiscal accountability for program budgets  
  • Create and maintain a positive, supportive, and rewarding work environment in teams
  • Via mentorship and coaching, encourage growth and success of team leaders
  • Establish viable program metrics and outcomes that are consistent with The Alex organizational values and theory of change
  • Working with the Director of Strategy, Evaluation and Research, the Director of CSI will be operationally responsible for the rollout and implementation of The Alex’s CiviCRM system throughout the entire portfolio 

Program Development

  • Provide direction, leadership, support, and accountability in the development, implementation, and evaluation of community and social initiatives 
  • Provide an evidence-informed and pragmatic lens to future program growth and expansion
  • Ensure all programs are effectively integrated with other Alex programs and are consistent with The Alex’s organizational theory of change
  • Develop and update appropriate policies and practice guidelines as necessary 

Social Programming

  • This portfolio will support all social initiatives throughout The Alex
  • Strive for consistency and continuity between all social programming streams at The Alex, regardless of program and clinical focus; share resources and clinical approach to ensure that clients have equitable access with reproducible outcomes throughout The Alex 

Community Development and Liaison

  • Establish collaborative partnerships with stakeholders at national, provincial, and peer-organization levels
  • Promote community awareness and pride in programming
  • Serve as an ambassador for The Alex in professional and public settings
  • Investigate and assess new partnerships and collaborations that may benefit The Alex clients and programs
  • Work closely with the Director of Community Engagement & Development to ensure program sustainability and explore avenues of growth for The Alex 

What you will bring: 

  • Master’s degree in discipline relevant to social and community portfolio; ideally an MSW
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a leadership role, with significant human resources and financial accountability experience
  • Competency with standard Microsoft Office Suite is essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to confidently represent The Alex in public forums
  • Relevant experience in social service or non-profit sector an asset, including direct experience in any area of social programming, legal services, or community development
  • Ability to plan and manage a large budget
  • Familiarity with an interest in data collection, the theory of change, the concept of evidence-based practice, and program evaluation  
  • Superior people management skills
