Who are we?  The Alex.  We are an award winning organization made up of change makers, forward thinkers and community builders.  We are changing the conversation around Health and Social Care. 

The Alex is a not-for-profit organization that has been operating in Calgary since 1973. The Alex provides services and programs to individuals and families who experience barriers to health and housing.  

Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy to access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness.  Using a multidisciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of healthcare that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to its two Health Centers, we run a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one Community Dental Bus, three Housing Programs, a Breast Feeding Clinic, a Community Food Centre and a Bottles4Health Program. 

We are currently seeking a full time Youth Support Specialist for our Youth Health Centre.  Reporting to the Clinical Coordinator, and working collaboratively with our Primary Healthcare Team.

The Youth Health Centre has been making a difference in the lives of Calgary’s youth aged 12 – 24.  We understand the unique challenges faced by vulnerable youth in our community.  Our dedicated teams of professionals are passionately committed to providing services and supports that break down barriers to a healthy future.  

RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

  • Actively participate in the evolution of the Youth Health Centre
  • Case management and direct client service
  • Advocacy and referral support
  • Liaising with community agencies
  • Empowering and supporting youth in reconnecting or strengthening connections to natural and family supports
  • Outreach support as part of a team
  • Promote a comfortable and safe environment (i.e. the drop-in) where youth feel engaged and involved in healthy activities
  • Build trusting relationships with youth who access services
  • Ensure that all youth who access the drop-in are aware of available services
  • Connect clients with housing, health and social services/supports (internal and external referrals)
  • Provide crisis counseling and one-on-one support/brief intervention
  • Gather and present program statistics and other pertinent information in monthly and annual reports
  • Make sure that The Alex Youth Health Centre is clean, orderly and maintained 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree or diploma in a human services field (social work, psychology, child and youth care, etc.) is preferred
  • 2 plus years of experience working with vulnerable youth, children and families
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • Must be comfortable working with youth using harm reduction, strength based, natural and logical consequences, and trauma informed care techniques as well as an understanding of anti-oppressive practice
  • Working knowledge of resources within the Calgary community
  • Skills in assessment, support and intervention, consultation, crisis counselling and advocacy are required
    • Understanding of the needs of high-risk youth and homelessness issues
    • Strong  organizational and time-management skills
    • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
    • Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team as well as the ability to take initiative and work independently
    • Assertive, professional and positive, with an ability to lead in a stressful environment
    • Firm boundaries yet able to effectively build relationships with hard to engage youth
    • Training in any of the following would be considered an asset: Applied Suicide Intervention Training, Mental Health First Aid, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, and Motivational Interviewing
    • A passion for advocating for at-risk youth
    • Ability to effectively represent the organization
    • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle
      • Candidate must be willing to have a child abuse registry and criminal record check
