Support Workers

Who are we?  The Alex.  We are change makers, forward thinkers and community builders and we are growing.  As part of our multi-disciplinary team, you would be part of the movement to bring innovative health and social solutions to Calgary’s most vulnerable.  One of our programs, HomeBase, is an initiative of Calgary’s 10-year plan to end homelessness.  It addresses homelessness by enabling individuals to become and remain housed and receive support and connections to services and treatment to facilitate their recovery.  We believe that you need a home to be healthy.

Due to program expansion, we have a need for Support Workers in a congregate housing model.  In your role, you will:

  • Advocate for, engage and support clients who have chronic physical health concerns
  • Provide basic life skills guidance
  • Address behavioural and conflict resolution issues as the need arises
  • Support each client’s individual goals as determined by their work with the Case Manager
  • Monitor safety issues in the building
  • Collaborate with community partners
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to achieve excellent client service outcomes
  • Hours of work:  Available to work (often on short notice), any one of our day, evening or night shifts that are 8 hours in length

Desired qualifications include:

  • Minimum of a Diploma in the Human Services field
  • Experience working with the homeless population
  • Should have a solid understanding of the principles of Housing First and Harm Reduction
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Exceptional communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Should be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must have superior documentation, time management and communication skills

If you are as passionate as we are about being a part of the solution for homelessness, please submit your resume to:  jobs@thealex.ca. Please specify desired shift in the subject line.

We thank all applicants; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
