Summer Camp Counsellor

Pathways Community Services Association is an Indigenous agency that draws jointly from the strengths and guidance of Indigenous teachings and traditions and from research-based practices in human services to support vulnerable children, youth and families. We are currently hiring Summer Camp Counsellors to coordinate and deliver camp programing for children and youth.  

The summer student will assist the Miskanawah (Cree word, meaning Pathways) team in implementing Pathways CSA’s programming mandate and camps.  Miskanawah delivers Indigenous programming to participants of all ages and ethnic origins in Calgary. Traditional teaching from the elders of the area guide much of the practice.

 Agency requirements

  • Undergo a 2-3 person panel interview process
  • Have a current Child Welfare and Criminal record check that meets Agency standards
  • Display cultural sensitivity, awareness, and knowledge and be willing to add to their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture
  • Adhere to a code of ethics and professionalism and work under the approved policies and procedures of Pathways
  • Maintaining professional boundaries as described in the Pathways Policy Manual
  • Undergo orientation to health and safety practices in the workplace

Role-specific requirements

  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old
  • Working towards university degree in relevant field
  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Experience in childcare and/or education would be considered assets
  • Experience with recreation and/or Indigenous culture would be considered assets
  • Confidence in dealing with conflict resolution and any behavioural issues that may arise.
  • Confidence leading program and activities for children of all ages
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks independently
  • Must possess a motivated, helpful and responsible attitude
  • Must be available to work up to 4 consecutive days and nights at out of town campsite

Job responsibilities

  • Planning, conducting camp experiences for children, youth, and families 
  • Researching best practices in social and emotional learning opportunities 
  • Exploring resources, recreational opportunities, and other low or no cost activities for children, youth and families in Calgary
  • Facilitating camp registration and scheduling children, youth, and families in activities
  • Developing and delivering outcome measurement tools to evaluate the impact of programming
  • Analyzing and reporting outcome data for program improvement
