The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbors, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.

Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy to access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness.  Using a multidisciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of healthcare that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Family Health Centre, we run a Senior’s Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one  Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Breastfeeding Clinic, a Community Food Centre, CLERC - legal support for Children and Youth and a Bottles4Health Program. 

Pathways to Housing is a recognized innovative, best-practice service delivery model for ending homelessness. This model seeks to end homelessness by providing ‘Housing First’ coupled with harm reduction services provided by a multidisciplinary Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team. This program serves homeless individuals with mental health, physical health and addiction disorders. Our multidisciplinary team provides our clients with housing and follows ACT principles in supporting them toward independent living. 

What you will do:

  • Responsible for working with the program clients using principles of rehabilitation and multiple addiction management strategies to assist clients to move toward independent living in community residences
  • Working within the context of client-centered care and multidisciplinary service delivery, the Substance Use Specialist provides both individual and group therapy to clients and families
  • Run addictions group for clients and their families using principles of evidence-based treatment models
  • Will use a range of social work and addiction related evidence-based practices, including individual, group and community rehabilitation
  • Assist in seeking treatment options while developing recovery goals
  • Required to complete annual Substance Use Assessments in addition to working as a liaison to establish and maintain professional relationships external stakeholders. 

What you bring:

  • MUST HAVE Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or Addictions Counseling
  • Minimum two years’ experience in management of clients with addiction disorders
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team model and able to work effectively within an innovative outreach service-delivery model
  • Previous experience working with the homeless sector an asset
  • Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention
  • Demonstrated effective communication, organizational, advocacy, and rapport-building skills
  • Knowledge of mental illness/psychiatric conditions, substance use
  • Knowledge of benefits, social and non-profit services in Calgary an asset.
  • Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy an asset
  • High level of flexibility  and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment required
  • A class 5 driver’s license, $2,000,000 liability coverage in car insurance, and vehicle are mandatory
  • Current First Aid/CPR is mandatory
  • Must take on-call shifts as per rotation
