Shift Program Case Manager

The Shift Program provides support services to adults of all genders who have worked, or are currently working in the sex industry. Shift has a harm reduction and rights based approach to sex work, providing services to individuals across the continuum of choice in their sex work involvement. 

The Shift Case Manager provides counseling, case management, support, education, harm reduction tools, and referrals to individuals who have been involved or are currently working in the sex industry. Shift provides supports to enhance safety and wellbeing for those who are actively working in the sex industry along with supports to leave the sex industry if this is an identified goal.

Shift Case Managers work primarily from the HIV Community Link Drop-in space in Calgary. This is a 35 hour per week role, with regular client hours on Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Some flexibility for evening and weekend hours may be required. The position will report directly to the Team Lead, Support Services.

Key Accountabilities:

Case Management

  • Provides comprehensive case management to women, men, and trans-identified adults currently or formerly involved in sex work 
  • In-office and community based service provision; community referrals, basic needs and resource coordination
  • Intake and assessment of new program clients
  • Eliciting and supporting client-driven case management and goal plans


  • Provides supportive counseling related to issues of mental health, trauma, and addictions
  • Provides crisis support and intervention

Community Engagement

  • Develops and/or facilitates population specific groups, workshops, and events
  • Maintains community partnerships and participate in community meetings and networks


  • Updates regularly and maintains program statistics, documentation, and participates in ongoing program evaluation and reporting
  • Ensures program accountability through maintenance of outcome based reports

Qualifications and Key Competencies:

  • A diploma or degree in a Human Services related field. Preference given to Social Work or Psychology with registration in the appropriate professional body as applicable
  • Minimum of 2 years’ direct work experience in a frontline or client-focused support setting, including case management and/or counseling
  • Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered
  • Proven proficiency in client support, counselling, and case management
  • A strengths-based, harm-reduction, and sex-workers’ rights philosophy of service provision
  • Knowledge of sex work related issues is desirable
  • Foundational knowledge of, and theoretical orientation to, intersectionality, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive practice frameworks
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and responsiveness in working across diverse populations
  • Thorough knowledge of local social service programs and community resources
  • Strong knowledge of mental health and addictions-related issues and interventions
  • High ethical standards and professionalism, with a demonstrated ability to adhere to strict confidentiality practices
  • Demonstrated self-awareness of own beliefs and biases
  • A criminal record and child welfare information system check is required
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle is an asset
  • Training in suicide intervention and non-violent crisis intervention is an asset
