Settlement Counsellors


Title:                     Settlement Counsellors

                             2 – One-year Parental Leave Replacements

                             2 – Regular positions

Terms:                  Full time/ 40 hours per week

Functional Statement: Working in the Resettlement & Integration Services Division staff in these positions assist all refugees with their resettlement and adaptation process which facilitates them moving towards self sufficiency.


  • To provide immediate essential services to meet the needs of government-assisted refugees destined to Calgary within 4 – 6 weeks of their arrival.
  • To deliver services in accordance with the “Resettlement Assistance Program” Service Delivery Handbook.
  • To provide essential services to refugees during their 1st year of Federal income support.
  • To deliver follow up orientation sessions after refugees exist the Division.
  • To provide community resource information as required.
  • To provide guidance, support, information that assists refugees with adjusting to everyday living in Canada.
  • To provide emergency interpretation and translation.
  • To participate in the planning and implementation of programs and services for refugees.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of services and recommend enhancements to service delivery.
  • To counsel (non-therapeutic) and support refugees who may experience issues such as family violence, substance abuse, mental health issues, loss of self esteem, loneliness and isolation and to refer, when necessary, to other professionals and/or work in collaboration with them in a cultural liaison capacity.
  • To identify and refer clients for ELS support services.
  • To plan and facilitate workshops, presentations, seminars with mainstream agencies to promote cultural diversity and sensitivity. 
  • To maintain a client file in accordance with standards and to participate in a team environment.


  • A post secondary degree/diploma in Education, Social Work, or related discipline is preferred. A combination of experience and related education may be considered.
  • 2 – 4 years experience working with New Canadians is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build relationships with a diverse group of cultural backgrounds.  
  • Excellent cultural competency skills and experience working in a multicultural and diverse environment.
  • Competency in utilizing the Microsoft Office applications of Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong verbal, written and listening skills in both English and a second language.
  • Must be able to present a recent Criminal Records Check and Intervention Records check.
