About the Habitat for Humanity ReStore

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore sells new and gently-used furniture, appliances, building materials at 40-60% below regular retail prices. Products are donated by household and business in the community, and the proceeds from the sale of these products support Habitat for Humanity in southern Alberta.  With total revenues from ReStores in Calgary and Medicine Hat exceeding $3.8 million annually, the ReStores address an important community need, support environmental responsibility, and together, make up one of the largest and most successful ReStore operations in Canada.

 

The ReStore is a social enterprise that provides financial support to the programs of Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta (HFHSA). Habitat helps Alberta working families enter the housing market by purchasing a Habitat home in a family friendly community through our affordable mortgage program. Through Habitat’s programs, working families are able to achieve long-term strength, stability and independence for themselves and their children.

 

We are recruiting a Manager to lead our largest store in northeast Calgary. With 2018 revenues projected at $2.5 million, approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of warehouse and retail space, and 20 full and part time staff, we are looking for an experienced individual that can continue to grow the operation by building a team and leading them towards established goals and outcomes.

 

Purpose:

You will drive the success of our largest store. Your objective will be to provide the community with the best possible home improvement shopping and donation experience which will maximize ReStore donations and sales, and grow the market we serve. You will be responsible for achieving:

  • a customer-service-oriented team culture which engages and empowers staff and volunteers;
  • safe and efficient trucking, receiving and warehouse processes;
  • a positive and professional shopping experience for customers;
  • a responsive and reliable truck dispatch and donation pickup service serving both Calgary stores;
  • an efficient certified appliance repair-for-sale process;
  • strong relationships with key donors;
  • effective processes and controls for: assigning value and tax-receipting donations; cash management and POS operations; tracking inventory;
  • successful marketing and promotions programs for both donations and sales (working with the Habitat marketing team);  
  • a secure warehouse and retail operation;
  • a safe workplace with a strong safety record.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Staff management, leadership, support, coordination, scheduling and delegation
  • Sales performance, forecasting the weekly/monthly goals and meeting or exceeding established targets
  • Core store operations: receiving, inventory warehousing and storage, floor displays and product presentation; sale of donated product; POS system, cash management; store security
  • Donation pickup service: receiving and vetting requests, truck dispatch and scheduling
  • Donation drop off service: customer service, donation assessment and evaluation
  • Donation valuation and tax receipting
  • Business Gift-in-Kind donations program: supporting the Manager, Business Relations as needed to manage significant donations; secure new donor relationships; and steward key donor relationships.  
  • Household/residential donor program and services
  • Appliance ready-for-sale repair operation
  • Inventory management, monitoring and movement between stores
  • Volunteer program: providing a valuable and meaningful experience for volunteers, that supports ReStore’s service to the community, working with the Manager of Volunteer Services
  • Marketing and promotions: working with the HFHSA marketing team to support web site content development, social media activities, and execution of promotions
  • Finance and administration, planning and budgeting
  • Staff safety

 

Qualifications:

  • A degree or diploma in business administration or equivalent experience or training
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience managing or supervising staff within a retail or customer service environment
  • Good general knowledge of home improvement and construction products, furniture and appliances.
  • Experience with front-end management of retail, warehouse, receiving, trucking and inventory operations
  • Other experience relevant to ReStore operations. This could include other non-profit experience, or experience with other thrift stores, business development, donor stewardship, etc.
  • An entrepreneurial and innovative attitude
  • Proven excellent customer service experience and skills.
  • Proven excellent interpersonal, motivational and communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, planning and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency at analysing retail data, identify trends and preparing reports
  • High level of experience and comfort with computers is essential, including the use of Word, Excel and other MS Office applications, a CRM such as Salesforce; inventory and POS systems.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, works well with colleagues and staff
  • Capacity to work under pressure in a fast–paced environment.
  • Certification in WHIMIS and First Aid
  • Able to lift 50 pounds independently, more with a partner
  • Access to a vehicle and ability to travel to support donations and make deposits
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.
