Researcher

The Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations (CCVO) promotes and strengthens individual organizations and the nonprofit sector by building capacity, developing and sharing resources and knowledge, strengthening connections, leading collaborative work, and addressing the critical, systemic issues that impact the nonprofit sector.

The Researcher is an integral part of CCVO’s policy and research team. This position is ideally suited to someone who likes to undertake a variety of activities, is self-motivated, adaptable, and can work effectively in a team environment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Researcher reports to the Director, Policy and Research, and works closely with the Policy Analyst.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Undertakes CCVO’s research activities, including developing research design and tools, conducting literature reviews, collecting and analysing data, and preparing reports for internal and contracted research projects such as CCVO’s Alberta Nonprofit Survey.
  • Identifies, recommends and develops a system to monitor and track key indicators relevant to the nonprofit sector on an ongoing basis.
  • In collaboration with the Director, Policy and Research, produces monthly trends analyses of external environment, issues, and implications for the sector.
  • Contributes evaluation expertise to CCVO’s outcome measurement tools and processes.
  • Represents CCVO, individually or with the Director, Research and Policy, at various collaborative sector forums, including provincial and federal working groups on sector data.
  • Supports collaborative work with other nonprofit organizations on shared policy and research issues.
  • Works closely with Policy Analyst to support CCVO’s policy and government relations activities at the local, provincial and federal levels. This includes producing briefing notes, position statements, formal submissions, speeches, and other policy-related content as required.
  • Contributes to CCVO’s work leading up to and following the annual provincial budget announcement.
  • Collaborates with Communications staff to disseminate research, policy, and resource materials through vehicles including the CCVO website, bulletins, newsletters, workshops, and social media.
  • Supports CCVO’s workshops and events as needed, including booking speakers, developing content, addressing logistics, and delivering presentations.
  • Supports program development and process improvement activities.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree in Social Sciences, with formal training and practical experience in mixed research methods (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Exceptional oral communication and writing skills, with the ability to develop and present material for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; confident interacting with leaders in the nonprofit sector and government, and comfortable assisting with facilitating workshops and roundtable discussions.  
  • Highly organized and able to work to tight timeframes in a team environment requiring extensive collaboration and interaction with sector organizations.
  • Strong computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS), and online survey platforms.
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit sector will be a strong asset.
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular work hours, as required, to meet deadlines and assist with CCVO events, meetings, etc., and to undertake occasional out-of-town travel.
