Relief Night Counsellor




The Nights Program has openings for relief, Night Counsellors. The relief position is responsible for the Night Counselor duties in varies programs at Hull Services.  This is an awake overnight position.

The Night Counsellor's primary responsibilities are to attend to the health and welfare of the children and the security of the program and campus. Employees in this classification function as team members of the program and perform essential child care work as applies to the care, nurturance, supervision and discipline of the children.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensure the physical security of the cottage.
  • Conduct cottage rounds with the evening and morning staff to assure good cottage order, security and account for all the children.
  • Conduct cottage rounds routinely throughout the night at designated intervals and as necessary in situations when increased surveillance of the cottage and children is warranted, i.e., runaway concerns, suicidal clients, self-abusive persons served, medical concerns.
  • Keep apprised of all relevant documentation pertaining to cottage and children such as communications book, memos, cottage manuals, Service Plans, night directives manual, etc.
  • Record observations and significant information in appropriate reporting formats, i.e., runaway reports, confinement sheets, contact books, etc.
  • Attend to the physical needs and medical requirements of the children.
  • Ensure effective follow-through of specific interventions and strategies for each child as per treatment plan and directives.
  • Relay information about night events, child count, etc., to the Night Coordinator and report all significant or out-or ordinary situations to the coordinator, cottage senior staff or other appropriate personnel as required.
  • Maintain an up-to-date bed plan in the night directives book.
  • Within reason, attend to housekeeping tasks as set up with the cottage.
  • Attend to clerical tasks as determined by the cottage.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum qualifications - High School Diploma. Related academic or work experience is necessary.
  • Willingness and capacity to communicate with disturbed children and adolescents and a preparedness to be exposed to verbal/physical abuse.
  • No history of abusing children or criminal record, which might indicate a lack of positive regard for others and must be willing to submit to a Security Clearance Check (CWIS and Police Records)
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • High level of personal maturity and responsibility.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
