Reporting to the Nursing Coordinator, the RN’s primary responsibility is to facilitate safe medical procedures and decisions within programs at Hull. In collaboration with the Nursing Coordinator, the RN administers direct nursing care and assessments of Persons Served and provides advice and guidance regarding Persons Served medical issues to front line staff. The RN provides health related education to staff as required by the Agency, including personal health guidance as well as information and support for employees as it relates to their work and general work related health. The RN also provides administrative support related to the above responsibilities, as well as vacation and sick coverage for the Nursing Coordinator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Persons Served           

  • Provide first aid/nursing care and recommendations for medical intervention as requested by staff.
  • Consult with Agency Family Physician as required.
  • Access Persons Served electronic health records appropriately for best care of Persons Served.
  • Provide health education as requested by staff.
  • Offer treatment and advice regarding immediate health conditions as requested by staff.
  • Liaise with parents/guardians regarding health concerns as requested by staff.
  • Liaise with physicians, other medical facilities, other nursing professionals, and other facilities as required and/or requested by staff.
  • Liaise with public health nurse assigned to the Agency to assure immunizations are up-to-date.
  • Assure compliance with Alberta STI treatment and reporting.
  • Support on-site medical/psychiatric clinic (set-up scheduling, physician notifications, case management).

Staff

  • Provide first aid as required.
  • Review Staff/Volunteer Injury Reports to assure appropriate response including blood-borne pathogen exposure procedures.
  • Educate employees regarding Universal Precautions, Medication Administration, Naloxone Use and other health courses as required.
  • Provide:
    • hepatitis B vaccinations (obtain vaccine, provide safe vaccination as required). 
    • annual flu shots (ordering vaccine, liaison with public health, education to staff, dispensing vaccine).
  • Assure use of safety procedures (use and availability of protective medical items such as gowns, masks, CPR protective devices, etc.).
  • Educate employees regarding current and new medical procedures and policies according to Agency standards, provide general medical information as requested for various person served conditions and treatments, provide general medical information as requested for staff personal use.

Administrative

  • Assure first aid kits are maintained and placed in all areas designated by Occupational Health and Safety (vehicles, cottages, administration).
  • Assure Agency AEDs are maintained and operational.
  • Assure Jack Fair Clinic equipment and files are maintained.
  • Order medical supplies for programs, nursing supplies

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Registered Nurse with current AARN registration
  • Experience in Therapeutic Campus-Based Care treatment (preferred)
  • Clear Police Check including Vulnerable Sector Check, Child Intervention Record Check
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Interest, commitment, consistent, and a high level of personal maturity and responsibility
  • Ability to communicate effectively with persons served and staff
  • Basic computer skills
  • Personal suitability
