Regional Court Liaison

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary is a community-based non-profit organization.  We offer pathways to healing for women in conflict, or at risk of being in conflict, with the law by providing opportunities through supports and advocacy.

The Regional Court Liaison will provide support services to adults and youth making their first court appearances at three rural courthouses.   The courthouses in Canmore, Cochrane, Didsbury) will be served on a regular rotation of one morning per week at each location.  An additional day will be spent at the EFry main office in Calgary.

Specifically, the Regional Court Liaison will:

a)      Provide current and accurate information regarding court procedures, plea options, and legal processes to clients directly or through the use of volunteers.

b)      Make appropriate referrals to additional community and legal resources directly or through the use of volunteers.

c)      Advocate on behalf of clients through interactions with lawyers, crown prosecutors, clerks and court security personnel. 

The EFry volunteer program will seek to support the Liaison with trained local volunteers in each location.

Please note:  this is a permanent part time position (20 hours per week) beginning Jan 6, 2014.

If this interests you, do you have

  • a degree or diploma in Criminal Justice, Law, Social Work or other Human Service equivalent;
  • knowledge of community resources and Aboriginal traditions and culture;
  • experience working in the criminal justice system; 
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, MS Word, Outlook;
  • excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • an understanding of women’s issues, social justice advocacy, diversity and anti-oppressive practice;
  • Criminal Records Check, valid Alberta Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
