Program Supervisor

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.



The Program Supervisor works alongside and oversees the overnight Shelter staff/volunteers, the Health & Wellness team and is responsible for the day to day operations of both program areas. The Shelter Support Workers and Wellness Advocate report directly to the Supervisor. The person filling this role could be in charge and makes the final decision when it comes to matters occurring in the respective program areas. The Mustard Seed has a desire to grow its Support Services area particularly in Health & Wellness and would be looking to this Supervisor to create and enhance programming that would benefit those experiencing poverty, mental health and addiction issues so they experience a greater sense of hope and community in their lives. This position reports directly to the Managing Director – Central Alberta.



  • Oversee the night operations of Shelter Support Worker’s responsibilities.
  • Oversee the Wellness Advocate.
  • Train, supervise, and mentor employees and volunteers.
  • Develop and maintain programming throughout all areas that supports our clients in a holistic manner.
  • Enforce guest suspensions when necessary.
  • Provide feedback to their team members regularly and conduct monthly one on ones.
  • Facilitate regular team debriefs.
  • Advise Management when disciplinary measures towards staff are required.
  • Be a supportive and proactive team-mate to fellow support staff.
  • Provide crisis intervention as required.
  • Attend meetings and training as assigned.
  • Support and work alongside volunteers.
  • Support The Mustard Seed’s ministry through spiritual leadership within the Mustard Seed Community.
  • Act as a positive Mustard Seed Ambassador.
  • Oversee scheduling of staff and update payroll information.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Education in Social Work; Psychology; Counselling and/or Human Services related fields required;
  • 2+ years of experience working as a frontline support staff in the human services field;
  • Experience in program development in the Human Services field considered a strong asset;
  • Experience working with marginalized individuals and communities who have experienced mental health struggles, poverty and addictions;
  • Christian ministry background considered a strong asset;
  • Strong leadership, people, and communication skills;
  • Knowledge of mental illness and addictions;
  • Customer service experience;
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team;
  • Strong desire to work with a marginalized population;
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Experience as a supervisor leading teams; 



  • Full-time work schedule is Sunday to Thursday 2:30pm to 11:00pm
  • This position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve;
  • This position requires the training and usage of two-way radio communications, MS Office based programs, as well as a database system;
  • Working with an at-risk population in life recovery.
