Part-Time Cross Country Ski Head Coach

The Organization 

The Calgary Ski Club was incorporated in 1935 and is a non-profit recreational ski club for children to adults.  We are run by volunteer members and we have a current membership of approximately 400.  Our mission is to promote the joy of skiing, in all its diversity, and to foster fellowship, healthy living and adventure year-round among recreational skiers and outdoor enthusiasts.

 

Job Position: Part-Time Cross Country Ski Head Coach

Calgary Ski Club (CSC) is seeking a Part-Time Cross Country Ski Head Coach to support and develop CSC’s cross country ski lessons program, focusing on recreation, dryland fitness, and programs for all members.  This position is focused on the following objectives:

  • improving the skiing abilities of the CSC members including students in our lesson programs
  • recruiting and developing Coaches and Assistant Coaches
  • advising on safety training practices for the recreational programs

CSC is a growing organization and has always had a focus on enjoyment of the outdoors and having fun.  Our CSC Council (board of directors) works collaboratively and ensures all programs achieve maximum possible success.  The part-time Head Coach reports directly to the CSC Council.  Council will appreciate your support in the administration of club programs.

 

CSC’s Cross Country Ski Programs 

The Head Coach will develop a coordinated work plan for these cross country ski lessons programs for adults, youth, and children (“jackrabbits”):

  • Dryland ski fitness
  • Cross country ski lessons 

 

Development and Mentoring of Coaching Staff 

  • Recruit Coaches and Assistant Coaches (Note: The CSC currently has about a dozen Coaches and eight Assistant Coaches.  Children’s (Jackrabbits’) coaches have training for Introduction to Community Coaching (ICC) and Community Coaching (CC).  Jackrabbits’ Assistant Coaches have at least ICC.  Adults’ Coaches have ICC, CC, and at least CANSI Level 1 certifications or equivalent
  • Develop the skill level of all Coaches and Assistant Coaches

 

Leadership and Communication

  • Keep abreast of the current trends in cross country skiing, coaching and instruction, including dryland training and lifestyle benefits of fitness; incorporate this knowledge into coaching practices, programs, and newsletters as required
  • Develop and coordinate program guidelines, schedules, and budgets with Council Directors, coaching staff, the equipment manager, the Liaison Team, and other volunteers as required
  • Manage the coaching staff’s contracts
  • Manage the coaching staff’s monthly time and expense claims
  • Recruit at least one parent from the Jackrabbits program and at least one coach to form a Liaison Team.  This Liaison Team will report to CSC Council on programs and coaches’ training, as well as provides timely answers to queries from CSC Council.  Two members of the Liaison Team, specifically one parent and one coach, would attend the monthly Council meetings

 

Education

  • The applicant will have the old or new NCCP or equivalent certification.  Preference will be given to applicants having NCCP Level 2 or Competitive Coach Introduction (CCI-L2T) training
  • In lieu of the NCCP certification, international experience in coaching cross country skiing or biathlon will be considered

 

Experience 

  • Demonstrated cross country ski coaching experience is required
  • Previous experience in sport-related management and event management is an asset along with ability as a team builder, an independent worker, and effective communicator
  • Experience in working with non-profit board organizations is also an asset

 

Additional Information

This position will run from September 2017 to May 2018, with fewer hours in the autumn and spring, and more hours throughout the winter.  This position may continue for subsequent terms.  Remuneration is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  CSC may consider some incentive compensation in addition to a base salary for exceeding certain growth objectives for the club, such as: increasing participation by lessons participants in cross country ski day trips; number of coaching staff recruited; the progress in the coaching staff’s certifications.  This will be discussed with short-listed candidates only.

 

The successful candidate will be required to have a police record check as part of the qualifications for the position.  The successful candidate will be required to sign Cross Country Canada’s Coaches Code of Conduct, obtain Cross Country Canada’s Coaching License, and sign CSC’s contract for this term position.
