About the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre:

The Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre (SKCAC) is a Calgary based not-for-profit organization. The SKCAC works in collaboration with relevant partner agencies to best serve children and families who are involved in the investigation and treatment of child abuse. The Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre is a physical site, where more than 115 professionals deal with the criminal investigation, child protection, medical and psychosocial needs of children, youth and families impacted by child abuse and maltreatment. The focus of work at the SKCAC is children and youth who have experienced sexual abuse and severe and complex physical abuse and neglect.

About the opportunity:

One of the services within the CAC is the Prenatal Outreach Support Team (POST). This is a collaborative initiative between Calgary Police Service (CPS) and the CAC to identify and provide specialized intervention and referrals for vulnerable pregnant women in high-risk situations.

The POST Outreach Support Worker is responsible for providing support and outreach to marginalized woman who are pregnant or parenting newborns.


Working in collaboration with the POST nursing and police staff, the POST Outreach Support Worker is responsible for:

  • Direct involvement and engagement with clients
  • Utilizing a variety of outreach methods to reach isolated and/or disengaged clients
  • Assessing client barriers to services and facilitating access as required
  • Providing urgent supports to clients based on their needs
  • Maintaining regular contact with clients in the community
  • Providing information, education and support to increase awareness of risk factors associated with pregnancy and increase a positive outcome for both mother and newborn
  • Providing POST incentives, assistance and facilitating transportation to access appropriate services
  • Engaging, collaborating and building trusting relationships with community service providers in and around Calgary to enhance the continuum of services for the clients
  • Participating in POST meetings, documentation, education and evaluation activities
  • Documenting and charting client information
  • Driving to appointments and meetings
  • Keeping POST nursing staff and police staff up-to-date and informed of client status

Required/Desired Qualifications:

  • A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered for this position. A post-secondary education is preferred.
  • Direct experience working with individuals and diverse communities dealing with issues of poverty, homelessness, addictions, mental health, and pregnant and postnatal women is essential.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health promotion theory and practice, change theory, harm reduction for this population.
  • Knowledge of relevant community resources is an asset.
  • Knowledge of suicide prevention, non-violent crisis intervention, mental health assessments, motivational interviewing, strength based and solution focused communication skills is also an asset.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment and with community partners is required.
  • Fluency in additional languages an asset.
  • A valid driver’s licence and a reliable vehicle are required.
  • An Enhanced Security Clearance and Child Welfare Intervention check is required.

This is a full-time contract position until March 31, 2021. The work schedule will include 4 weekday shifts, 10 hours each with flexibility required to work occasional evenings as needed to meet client and team demands.
