Mental Health Support Worker

Position Summary:

Inn from the Cold requires a Mental Health Support Worker who will work with patients to promote optimum mental and emotional health. The Support Worker provides individuals, groups and families with counseling/ therapy for a wide range of psychological and/or emotional problems such as abuse, mental disorders, substance abuse and family situations. The incumbent uses evaluation techniques to develop and implement therapeutic treatment plans in a shelter setting and long term housing setting. The Mental Health Support works alongside other social workers and medical professionals to develop treatment plans for guests.  The Mental Health Support Worker will conduct all responsibilities with the highest level of integrity and care in accordance with (IFTC) mission, vision and values.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Put therapy models into practice (i.e. CBT, DBT) in the short term shelter setting and long term Journey House setting
  • Skill set to support clients’ steps toward healing post crisis
  • Capacity to build trust with guests so they are open to discussing issues that are occurring
  • Ability to lead therapeutic groups with a model that will assist with addiction recovery
  • Assess patients' mental states ensuring there is no risk of self-injury or injury to others
  • Collect information about patients through interviews, observations, tests, and / or available medical records
  • Observe patients to detect indications of abnormal physical or mental behaviour
  • Firm understanding of harm reduction approach and its implementation in a community based setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals who are marginalized, under served and homeless.
  • Demonstrated ability working with individuals living with substance misuse issues and or an untreated mental illness
  • Knowledge of community, social and health resources
  • Aid patients in maintaining mental health stability
  • Document medical records according to requirements of regulatory agencies
  • Maintain written records of all patient interactions
  • Complete annual training required for position such as crisis intervention training
  • Maintain confidentiality of records relating to clients and treatment plans at all times
  • Act as patient advocate to coordinate required services or to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • University degree or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and experience in an applied Human/Social Service field
  • Minimum two (2) years mental health work experience required
  • Ability to work with clients living with mental illness
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent time management and prioritizing skills
  • Excellent communication skills when interacting with professionals or patients
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
  • Knowledge of program policy and procedures
  • Writing skills for reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals required
  • Ability to define problems, gather data, organize facts, and make valid conclusions
  • High level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning, and discretion
