The Alex Community Health Centre is a not-for-profit organization that is changing how we look at health care in Calgary. Our health, housing and food programs support our most vulnerable neighbours, tackling tough health and social issues head-on.

Since 1973, our cost-effective programs have provided preventative care in a welcoming, easy to access environment, moving people from poverty to stability and from crisis to wellness.  Using a multidisciplinary team approach, we focus care on assessment, intervention and promotion of all aspects of health. We embrace a model of healthcare that is accessible, responsive and participatory. In addition to the Family Health Centre, we run a Senior’s Health Centre, a Youth Centre, two Mobile Community Health Buses, one  Dental Health Bus, four Housing First Programs, a Breastfeeding Clinic, a Community Food Centre, CLERC - legal support for Children and Youth and a Bottles4Health Program.  

We are currently seeking a full time Mental Health and Addiction Clinician for our Complex Care Clinic- working with clients with complex mental, physical, social health needs and addictions.  Reporting to the Clinic Team Lead and working collaboratively within our Primary Healthcare Team. This position MAY encompass working within the extended hours portion of the Family Health Centre with potential shifts on evenings and weekends. 

What you will do:

  • Provide a range of therapeutic supports and community rehabilitation services to clients in the community
  • Support the referral, screening and intake process
  • Conduct client assessments and create treatment plans/goals with the client
  • Working within the context of client-centered care and multidisciplinary service delivery, provide individual and group therapy to clients
  • Develop a program for clients using principles of CBT, DBT, group, and individual programming 
  • Assist individuals and the community to adopt heathy behaviors
  • Connect clients to appropriate services in the community
  • Coach individuals towards meeting goals
  • Complete needs and risk assessments
  • Respond to crisis and emergency situations
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team of professionals as a vital member of the Family Health Centre and Complex Care Clinic
  • Be a creative problem solver and have the ability to think outside the box in order to help clients achieve success where they formerly have not

What you bring:

  • Master’s Degree preferred in Psychology or Clinical  Social Work
  • Minimum two years of experience as a Mental Health/Addictions Clinician
  • Eligible for registration with their professional discipline in Alberta
  • Social Workers must be authorized to perform psychosocial interventions
  • Knowledge of mental health/psychiatric conditions, substance use, individual and family development stages, and Mental Health Act
  • Previous experience working with clients living in at-risk environments including homelessness
  • Strong counselling skills in evidence based modalities
  • Comfort with working with clients on opioid replacement therapy
  • Demonstrated effective communication, organization, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skills
  • Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Confidence in dealing with conflict and at risk situations
  • Comfortable working independently
  • First Aid and CPR required
  • Non-violent crisis intervention preferred
  • Must be comfortable working using harm reduction, strength based, natural and logical consequences, and trauma informed care techniques as well as an understanding of anti-oppressive practice
  • Firm boundaries yet able to effectively build relationships with hard to engage patients
