Math and Science Instructor

Responsibilities and Outcomes:

Deliver Math and Science curriculum to adult participants (Immigrants, indigenous and non-indigenous, Canadian born) in the Pre-Apprenticeship Trades Training program.

  • Instruction and practice in English, adequate to prepare participants to:

         -     Understand the math and Science material suitable for trade school
         -     Become familiar with the technical vocabulary of the trade
         -     Able to pass the pre-apprenticeship exam (cluster 4)
         -     Understand the culture of the Canadian workplace.

  • Monitor participant attendance and report all absences/irregularities to program staff
  • Communicate participant progress with program staff and collaborate on any additional support participants may require 
  • Attend planning and consultative meetings with department staff as required.



  • Participants have the Math and Science skills required to be successful in their trade

         -    80% of participants will pass the pre-apprenticeship exam.

  • 80% of participants will report satisfaction with the quality, curriculum and instruction in the academic upgrading portion, through program evaluations.
  • All participants will maintain acceptable scores during the program, considering their initial level of ability.
  • Participants can access appropriate employment from the skills gained in the Trades Training Program



  • Degree in Education, Adult Education or other Related Profession.
  • Experience in delivering a comprehensive curriculum to adult learners using adult education principles.
  • Experience in delivering a Math and Science curriculum that will result in meeting outcomes.
  • Experience designing Math and Science curriculum to meet the needs of diverse group of learners preparing to enter the trades.
  • Demonstrated ability in working with marginalized individuals, ESL adults and indigenous. Developing rapport with participants, program evaluation, classroom management, individual educational support, and individual and group employment support.



Approximately 120 daytime hours for 12 weeks. The total instructional time is allocated between three Contract Instructors (Life Skills, Math/Science and English). The program operates 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday to Thursday. The schedule has a degree of flexibility when being designed.
