Manager, Policy and Research

The Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations (CCVO) promotes and strengthens individual organizations and the nonprofit sector by building capacity, developing and sharing resources and knowledge, strengthening connections, leading collaborative work, and addressing the critical, systemic issues that impact the nonprofit sector.

The Manager, Policy and Research serves an integral role in CCVO’s policy and research team. This position supports fulfillment of CCVO’s mission by providing leadership to policy and research activities. This position is ideally suited to someone who likes to undertake a variety of activities, is adaptable, can work effectively on multiple tasks and coordinate the work of others.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Manager, Policy and Research reports to the Director, Policy and Programs, and supervises the Policy Analyst and Researcher.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Policy and Government Relations

  • Monitors external environment for research and policy activities, trends, and issues related to the nonprofit sector.
  • Coordinates background research, internal and external briefing notes, position statements and formal submissions as required.  
  • Collaborates with the Communications team to disseminate relevant policy and resource materials to the Alberta nonprofit sector and other key stakeholders through a variety of communications vehicles including the CCVO website, newsletters, workshops, and social media.
  • Takes a pro-active approach to supporting board and management government relations activities.
  • Leads analysis of annual provincial budget.
  • Supports CCVO’s workshops and events, including booking speakers, developing content, addressing logistics, and delivering presentations.


Research

  • Leads research projects, including CCVO’s Annual Alberta Nonprofit Survey; assumes role of lead report writer.
  • Provides expertise in research design and methodology.
  • Supports collaborative work with other voluntary sector organizations on shared policy and research issues. Promotes shared methodology and free exchange of information.


General

  • Supports program development and process improvement.
  • Supports the development of CCVO’s policy and research agenda.
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to the Policy Analyst and Researcher.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Related graduate level degree.
  • Knowledge of policy development processes.
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit/voluntary sector.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Experience facilitating workshops.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative research and analytical skills.
  • Able to work to tight timeframes and highly organized.
  • Able to work in a team environment with extensive collaboration and interaction with colleagues and other organizations in the voluntary sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise others.
  • Strong computer skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office, statistical and online survey platforms.
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular work hours, as required, for meetings, workshops, and to meet deadlines.
