Maintenance Manager

We are currently hiring for a full time Maintenance Manager.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Maintenance Manager oversees all functions relating to the Maintenance Department. The Maintenance Manager directs and coordinates all maintenance activities, determines work procedures and supervises activities of the maintenance workers. As a tradesman, the Maintenance Manager performs or assists with direct maintenance and repair work and performs other related tasks as needed.

  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, orientation and training of maintenance staff.
  • Prepare work schedule, assign duties, coordinate and inspect the work activities of staff.
  • Advise and assist staff in performing their duties.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and safety regulations.
  • Promote a positive atmosphere within the department, attend to staff morale.
  • Ensure the maintenance of all buildings, grounds and equipment owned by the Agency.
  • Develop and maintain a preventative maintenance program to ensure that the various service systems are in proper working order.
  • Ensure the serviceable condition of sprinkler systems, fire equipment and appliances. Conduct periodic inspections as set forth by the Provincial Fire Inspector.
  • Conduct inspections to ensure all fire and other safety precautions required by law and Agency standards are carried out in order to detect and report any potential fire or accident hazards.
  • Prepare necessary reports as may be required. Maintain records of completed jobs, budgets, requisitions, inventory, automotive ledgers, supplier's quotes, etc.
  • Perform liaison role with other department heads in matters concerning plant equipment in order to coordinate related activities.
  • Ensure Agency vehicles are serviced and maintained.
  • Perform major trade related maintenance and repair work as appropriate.
  • Consult to contractors and architects. Participate in tendering processes including reviewing tenders and recommending approval.
  • Coordinate replacement of capital items, negotiate for best prices.
  • Take on a liaison function with external contractors, architects, etc.


  • Based on a 40 hour work week.
  • Job involves heavy physical demands including lifting.
  • Job entails "on-call" responsibilities and availability to work after hours and on weekends as scheduled.


  • Five years of experience in maintenance work.
  • Trade qualifications in plumbing, or carpentry, or electrical, etc.
  • Knowledge of boilers, heating, electrical, painting.
  • Possession of a valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License/approved Driver's Abstract.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with external and internal contacts.
  • An understanding of the principles of supervision, training, and evaluation of staff.
